Obituaries PUBLISHED:
of West Branch Formerly of Owosso Age 84, passed away on December 31, 2007 at home with his family near him. He was born on April 9, 1923 in Shaftsburg, the son of Roy and Lavesta Baumgras. He served in World War II in the 8th Army Air Force 401st BG. He was a member of the American Legion Post #248 and a lifetime member of the VFW. He married Noreen E. Daschner on April 27, 1946 in Fort Wayne, Ind. She preceded him in death in 1965. They shared 11 children together. He later married Marie Fowler, of Owosso, on August 22, 1975. They share one son together. He had worked as a construction and heavy equipment operator for over 50 years until retiring in 1994 from Searles Construction of St. Johns. Daniel enjoyed reading Louis L'Amour books and fishing. He has spent the last 15 years living on the Tittabawassee River in Alger. He is survived by his wife, Marie; five sons, Daniel (Jody) Baumgras, of Wyoming, James (Betsy) of Henderson, Paul (Mary), of Bath, Robert (Roxanne) of Ovid, and Steven of Florida; seven daughters, Kaylee Baumgras, of Indiana, Katharine Shire, Wendy Baumgras, Susan Baumgras and Marge Culp, all of Corunna, Lavesta Baumgras, of Wisconsin, and Karen (Forest) Halvorsen, of Chesaning; three step-children, David, Kelly and Tina; 24 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 11 step-grandchildren; four brothers, Dale, Stanley, Gaylord and Henry; five sisters, Betty, June, Lois, Marilyn and Marjorie. He was predeceased by wife, Noreen; son, David; parents, Roy and Lavesta; two granddaughters, Tamatha and Tracie Shire; two brothers, Melvin and Frances; and one sister, Rosemary. Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be on January 12, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Laingsburg Cemetery. A short service and dinner will follow at the American Legion Hall of Laingsburg. All are welcome. A special thanks to Hospice Helping Hands of West Branch to the nurses and aids who helped make our loved one's end of this life's journey peaceful and dignified. Bless you all.
JOE "JOEY" A. REEVES of Brant Formerly of Detroit Age 74, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2007 at St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw. Joe Ann Scott was born on July 17, 1933, to the late William and Johnnie (Bunn) Scott in Montgomery, Ala. She married Jere D. Reeves on February 15, 1951. He preceded her in death in November, 1977. Joey is survived by her children, "the seven D's": Debbie Batiste, of St. Paul, Minn., Douglas and Kathy Reeves, of Prescott, Dawne and Carol McGinnis, of Reese, Darren and Kristi Reeves, of Cottage Grove, Minn., David and Heidi Reeves, of Acton, Mass., Dana and Robert Clark, of Brant, and Derek and Gail Reeves, of Chesaning; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Johnnie Palermo, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Joey was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Charles Batiste, and one brother, William D. Scott, Jr. Arrangements were entrusted to Walker-Martin Funeral Home of Chesaning. Cremation has taken placed. No services are planned. ELTON A. JOHNSTON of Chesaning Age 84, passed away Wednesdsay morning, January 2, 2008 at the Memorial Healthcare, Owosso. He was born on August 17, 1923 in Montcalm County. He was a truck driver for McDonald Dairy for 30 years. He loved to hunt and fish. Those left to mourn him include his wife Gene (Foglesong) Johnston; his children and their spouses, Roger (Beth) Johnston, fo Franfort, Rita (Randy) Berndt, of Owosso, Gail (Glenn) Currin, of Bloomfield Hills, Keith (Janet) Johnston, of Chesaning, and Jill Johnston, of Chesaning; his nine grandchildren, Todd Johnston, Polly Clausen, Amber Berndt, Mark Berndt, Laura Currin, Lindsey Currin, Alex Currin, Garrett Johnston and Blake Johnston; his great-granddaughter, Emersen Berndt-Phillips; and nine living brothers and sisters. Two brothers and one sister have passed away. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Chesaning. Rev. Dr. Sherry Parker officiated, with burial at Wildwood Cemetery, Chesaning Township. Arrangements were entrusted to the Misiuk Funeral Home of Chesaning. ALFRED B. "ALF" MAIKE of Chesaning Age 88, passed away suddenly on Monday, December 31, 2007 at St. Mary's of Michigan, Saginaw. He was born on November 24, 1919, the son of Fred and Theresa (Constine) Maike. He was born and lived in the Chesaning area all his life. He was a World War II army veteran. He served three and one-half years in the South Pacific theater. He married Mary Polash on May 1, 1948. She survives him. He retired from General Motors Fisher #1 where he was a truck driver and a member of Local #581. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Christopher Council #2943, and a lifetime member of the VFW, currently with Post #6579 in New Lothrop. Along with his wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Alfred (Rosemary) Maike, of Chesaning, Mary Kay (Roger) Ososki, of Bay City, and Bruce Maike, of Florida; grandchildren, Joely, Chad, Phillip and Ashley; brothers, Laverne, Louis and Gerald; sisters, Lorraine Cowman, Jane Vondrasek and Lucille Maike. Those who have passed away include his parents; son, Phillip; two infant daughters, Margo Ann and Tina Marie; brothers, James, Clarence, Lawrence and Walter; and sister, Evelyn. Final prayers took placed at the Misiuk Funeral Home of Chesaning on Friday, January 4, 2008, at 10:15 a.m., followed by Holy Mass at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Chesaning. of Owosso Age 57, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2008. Susan was born on September 20, 1950 in Owosso, the daughter of Donald and Alberta (Porter) Dickinson. On June 9, 1978, she married LaVerne E. Sebert in Flushing. She enjoyed gardening, art, drawing, painting, fishing and listening to music. She loved being with her grandchildren, especially cooking and baking with them. She collected all kinds of chicken and rooster knick-knacks. She is survived by her husband, LaVerne; two children, John (Trisha) Scott and Deborah Scott; grandchildren, Nicol, Bree, Damian, Storm and Destiny; brothers, Mike (Vicki) Dickinson and Don (Tami) Dickinson; and a sister, Donna Dickinson. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the Nelson-House Funeral Home in Owosso. Pastor John Walworth will officiate. JULIA A. THIEL of Oakley Age 80, passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2008 at the Carson City Hospital. Julia A. Maraskine was born on July 27, 1927 in St. Charles, the daughter of Serafine and Katherine (Baker) Maraskine. She married Arthur Thiel on July 6, 1946. He preceded her in death on November 15, 2001. Julia loved to line and square dance, and enjoyed beading and crafts. She held many jobs during her life and retired from Ventrola in Owosso. She is survived by her children: Michael Thiel, Thomas (Mona) Thiel, Patty (Cliff) Smith, Gary Thiel, Debbie (Leon) Moore, Mary Jane (Jay) Lehenky, Kevin Thiel, Rose Jungnitsch, Julie (Don) Birchmeier; step-children, Arlene Stopjik and David (Fran) Thiel; step-daughter-in-law, Donna Thiel; 35 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Farver and Margaret Mikulcik; and two brothers, Jack (Dorothy) Maraskine and Bob (Katie) Maraskine. Julia was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one son, Jack Thiel, a daughter, Cathy Thiel, a step-son, Eugene Thiel, and two sons-in-law, William Early and David Jungnitsch. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 7, 2008 at Walker-Martin Funeral Home, Chesaning. Rev. Richard Joliff will officiate, with burial in Ridge Road Cemetery.
