Lady Bulldogs come up short at Carrollton

CARROLLTON -- The St. Charles varsity cagegals made a game of it, but came up short Friday night in a 63-56 loss to host Carrollton. A bad fourth quarter and foul trouble at the end put the game out of reach for the Lady Bulldogs. The St. Charles gals led 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, but got out-scored 18-9 in the second. "We had a couple of people get in foul trouble in the second quarter," admitted St. Charles coach Larry Mishler. "We put our subs in, but we didn't get out on the Carrollton shooters like we should have, and they shot three threes. That kind of jump started them." For the rest of the game, the teams stayed fairly even, playing to a 13-13 tie in the third quarter. Carrollton had a 23-22 edge in the final frame. Foul trouble also proved to be a problem in the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs, with five players fouling out. Carrollton shot 14 of 24 from the charity stripe, mostly after the four minute mark, while the Bulldogs had just six attempts. "I thought we played pretty good tonight," Mishler said. "I thought we should have won the game." Kaleigh Bashans led the Bulldogs with 21 points, 15 of those coming in the second half. She also had three assists, three steals and three boards. Megan McSweyn added eight points with 10 boards. Jordan Mishler also had eight points with five rebounds. Jessy Gonzales chipped in seven points with three boards and three steals. Nicole Apsey had five points and four rebounds, while Jade Tribfelner added four points. The Bulldog defense was scorched by Carrollton's sophomore point guard, Myesha Agnew with 23 points. "She handles the ball extremely well," Coach Mishler said. "She makes them pretty darn good." The Bulldogs play host to Breckenridge on Monday night, then host Ithaca on Friday night.

The Chesaning gals opened the game with a 15-0 first quarter, then led 37-4 at the break. "This no-fouling, playing good defense is really catching on with our girls," said Scanlon. "We've had some pretty good practices over the last two weeks, and it really showed tonight." The Indians went 12 of 15 from the free throw line, while Alma was 0-0. Brooke Jastrzembowski led the Tribe with 26 points, six assists and three steals. Katie Vincke added 19 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Panthers pull away from Indian cagers, 52-44

CHESANING -- Alma's size proved too much for the Chesaning varsity cagers to handle Friday night in a 52-44 win for the Panthers. "They're the biggest team we've played," said Chesaning coach Jason Danek. "I thought that really affected some of our shots. They kind of intimidated us." Chesaning led 9-8 after the first quarter, but the Panthers used a 12-6 run in the second to garner a 20-15 lead at the intermission. Alma then out-scored the Tribe 16-13 in the third. It was a 16-16 tie in the fourth. The Indians shot 17 of 64 from the floor and 7 of 11 from the line. "We missed some open shots in the second half, and that hurt," Danek said. Cal Bishop led the Indians with a double-double -- 16 points and 10 rebounds. "Cal was our go-to guy tonight. He had an outstanding game," Danek praised. Chuck Harris finished with eight points, nine rebounds and four steals. Joe Bitterman added seven points with five boards and six steals. Cody Stoddard had six points with four boards. Andrew Guzdial had five points and three steals. The Indians fall to 3-4 on the season, 1-4 in the Tri-Valley Conference Central Division.
