Valley Lutheran battled back in the fourth, out-scoring the hosts 26-21, but couldn't make up enough ground. "We had a good third quarter that gave us a 10 point lead," said Chesaning coach Jason Danek. "But they just chipped away at us" With about a minute left to play, the Chargers took a 54-53 lead, but then fouled Chesaning's Cody Stoddard. Stoddard went to the line and sank both of his free throws to put the Indians up 55-54. Chesaning then played a solid defense, forcing the Chargers to turn the ball over and then foul to stop the clock. The Indians also made them pay by hitting their last 16 free throws on a 16 of 18 night. Joe Bitterman led the Tribe with 14 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Joe Devota also had 14 points with four boards. Stoddard finished with nine points and five rebounds, while Andrew Guzdial also had nine points with his four boards. Cal Bishop chipped in eight points with three steals. "We're happy that we found a way to win," Coach Danek summed up. The Indians are 6-5 on the season.

Montrose roundballers outlast LV, 39-32 MONTROSE - Montrose's varsity boys basketball team squandered a six-point halftime lead before finally pulling away from visiting LakeVille last Friday en route to a 39-32 GAC-Red victory. The Rams scored a dozen points in each of the first two quarters to take a 24-18 lead into the locker room, only to see the Falcons come out and tie the game at 26-26 with three minutes to go in the third stanza. But Montrose then ran off the final six points of the stanza to bump its advantage to 32-26 and take a lead it would never again relinquish. "We might have been a little rusty after the week off, but we played the type of patient game that we need to play in order to be successful," assessed Ram coach Rick Ustishen. The Rams were able to limit their turnovers to just 14 in the game and they committed no miscues in the second quarter, which was instrumental in their grabbing a halftime advantage. Preston Taylor led Montrose with 13 points while also hauling down four rebounds. Cody Groulx and freshman Keith Boswell each scored six points. Groulx and Boswell grabbed six and four rebounds, respectively. Cory Hargraves led the battle on the boards with 10 rebounds to go with his five points while Brandon Rose recorded five points, four assists and two steals. Adam Campbell tallied four points and eight boards. The Rams connected on 13 of 35 shots for a 37% ratio and converted 10 of 17 free throws. The win evens Montrose's slate to 4-4 in the GAC and 5-5 overall. |
