The Lady 'Dawgs spotted Millington a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, then watched the deficit increase at a rate of four points a period the rest of the way. Ram guys stall out in fourth quarter, lose 53-44 MONTROSE - A prolonged scoring drought cost Montrose's varsity boys basketball team a 53-44 loss to visiting Mt. Morris last Tuesday, as the Rams couldn't buy a basket in the decisive fourth quarter. Rick Ustishen's squad carried a 40-38 lead into the final stanza, then went the next seven minutes of play without scoring a point. Adam Campbell and Preston Taylor each sank a pair of free throws during the waning seconds of the game to account for the only scoring by the Rams in the fourth quarter. The disappointing finish came on the heels of a strong third quarter that saw Montrose outscore the Panthers, 17-10, to erase a five-point halftime deficit. "Obviously, our cold shooting down the stretch cost us the game," Ustishen remarked after the game. "I thought we played a deliberate and fairly disciplined game on offense, but we simply counldn't get the shots to drop when we needed it most." The Rams connected on 16 of 48 field goal attempts, including 2-of-10 from beyond the arc, for a 33% ratio. Montrose failed to take full advantage at the free throw line, where they made just 10 of 19 charity tosses. Taylor and Cory Hargraves shared scoring honors for Montrose with 14 points apiece. Taylor also had 10 rebounds and 3 steals while Hargraves hauled in seven caroms and blocked four shots. Brandon Rose scored all five of his points in the third quarter. Jared Barber scored four points and had three steals. Campbell chipped in with three points. The loss drops Montrose to 4-5 in the GAC and to 5-6 overall. |
