Chesaning's beloved Bonnymill Inn closes its doors

CHESANING - Chesaning's beloved Bonnymill Inn & Eatery, which sits at the West end of the village's beautiful Boulevard, closed its doors January 24, just short of two decades in business. The family owned establishment was purchased by Chesaning residents Howard, and the late Bonnie Ebenhoeh whom the business was named for, in 1988. Extensive remodeling of the former Chesaning Farmer's Co-op was conducted and it was opened as a bed & breakfast in November of 1989 offering 26 elegant guest rooms with a special touch of Victorian country charm. Rooms included patio rooms with outside entrances, specialty rooms which featured balconies, jet spray tubs, or porch views, and deluxe suites with two person in-room Jacuzzi tubs, fireplaces, and wet bars.

A beautiful garden courtyard area and wrap around porch full of rocking chairs was also available for guest's enjoyment and relaxation. Ebenhoeh's daughter, Carol (Ebenhoeh) Wirgau served as manager. After fifteen-and-a-half years, The Bonnymill Inn evolved into the next stage of its existence in June of 2006 with the addition of a full-service, 100 seat restaurant complete with a bar and coffee shop, and was renamed The Bonnymill Inn & Eatery.

Ebenhoeh and Wirgau noted the current economic climate for the decision to close the business telling members of the media that the business had experienced a drastic decline in room rentals. The Ebenhoeh family also owned and operated the Heritage House restaurant and the Carriage Shop gift shop. The Heritage House, with its Rathskellar Restaurant located on the lower level, stood as a landmark attraction in the center of the Boulevard attracting people to Chesaning from all over for over 25 years. The fine dinning establishment served as a centerpiece for the booming Boulevard business district during the 80's and 90's.

The Heritage House, Rathskellar, and Carriage Shop closed their doors in February of 2006. Built in 1908 as the private residence of lumber baron George Mason, the structure and its carriage house were purchased by the Ebenhoehs and remodeled into the upscale restaurant/rathskellar bar and gift shop trio. Over the years, both the Heritage House and the Bonnymill Inn served as cornerstones of Chesaning hosting many community events, weddings, and the many professional acts that came to town to perform on the Chesaning Showboat.
