Local News PUBLISHED: The school district and professionals from the United States Attorney's Office are teaming up to help parents learn how to keep their children safe from online predators, cyber-bullies and other Internet dangers. Child Predators: Hidden Dangers on the Internet will be held on Tuesday, February 12 at 6 p.m. in the Chesaning Middle School media center. The community forum is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Matthew Roth, Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, will give parents the tools and information needed to keep their children safe and secure in cyberspace.
U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan Stephen J. Murphy said internet predators pose a serious and growing threat to the safety and welfare of Michigan children. "Although the Internet has brought a tremendous amount of good to our society, it also has provided a vehicle for those who seek to abuse our children. Every day, children are targeted by sexual predators online," Murphy said. "My office is committed to seeking the maximum legally permissible sentences involving child exploitation cases. We have intensified and redoubled our enforcement and our community education programs to prevent, detect, punish and deter horrendous crimes against children." The forum will contain vital information for adults living in an era when young people are frequently the technology experts in the family household, noted Chesaning Schools Superintendent Kathy Stewart. "Our children are growing up in a very different world than the one we remember. Most young people know far more about the Internet and new technology than their parents. That's why it is critical that we fully understand the dangers our children are facing online and learn how to protect them," Stewart said. Parents from surrounding school districts are also encouraged to attend. "We are very pleased to be hosting the U.S. District Attorney's office for this forum. I hope parents and community members will take advantage of this valuable opportunity to learn about internet safety from the experts," Stewart said.
