CHESANING - Chesaning Union School District Superintendent Kathy Stewart is a straight A leader.

For the third year in a row Stewart rated in the highest level possible on her annual evaluation as officials responsible for tracking the job performance of the district's head chief rated Stewart as a leader who "exceeds expectations."

Board of Education members granted Stewart the well above average scores on her annual job performance at the board's February 2 retreat meeting.

Stewart was scored in seven categories that included Educational Leadership, Business and Finance, Relationship with the Board, Community Relations, Superintendent/Staff Relationships, Achievement of Goals, and Personal Qualities.

"This board and this district are very lucky to have such a dedicated individual running our school," stated Board President Jennie Carlton.

"Kathy is very visible at all events. She leads our district with integrity and grace, and always puts the children as her first priority."

In her third year at the district's helm, Stewart again chose to receive her evaluation in open session although the State Open Meetings Act allows school leaders to opt to receive their evaluations in closed session, something many do.

A graduate of Chesaning Union High School and Central Michigan University, Stewart joined the district in 1998 as Curriculum Director and Assistant Superintendent, taking over head duties in 2005 following the retirement of Penny Swanson.

She began her teaching career in 1983 at St. Paul Catholic School in Owosso and then spent several years teaching in the St. Charles Community School District, including two years as principal.

A resident of Chesaning, Stewart and her husband Ron have three children, daughter Jessica and son Jacob who are both graduates of Chesaning, and daughter Molly who is currently a student at Chesaning.

She is currently under contract through June 30, 2011.

The superintendent's contract, including benefits and salary, will be up for changes and adjustments at the board's February meeting.

Solid waste collection another victim of winter weather

SAGINAW -- Due to the severe winter weather mid-Michigan experienced on Wednesday and Thursday, solid waste collection services for many Mid Michigan Waste Authority member communities have been significantly impacted.

Waste Management collection trucks were pulled in the early afternoon Wednesday due to severe snow blowing and treacherous conditions. On Thursday, WM Saginaw was closed for all collection services due to the continued terrible road conditions.

On Friday, road conditions continued to be onerous and collection was greatly slowed by snow-covered and, in many cases, completely snow-blocked roads.

As such, areas missed in some Wednesday communities and all Thursday communities will not be serviced again until their service dates next week, weather permitting.

Five southern MMWA communities with Friday collection days are serviced out of the Lennon WM shop, which was less affected by the snow. These five communities were to have service on Saturday: Brady Township, Chapin Township, Chesaning Village and Township and Maple Grove Township.

The other affected communities include: Albee Township (Friday collection), and St. Charles Village and Township (Friday collection).
