Lady Dawg's take bite out of Huskies

BRECKENRIDGE -- The St. Charles varsity cagegals showed a lot of scrap Friday night in a 50-37 win over host Breckenridge The Lady Bulldogs started with an eight point lead, but trailed 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. However, an explosive 16-8 margin in the second opened things up. They then out-scored the Huskies 9-4 in the third an 14-13 in the fourth to seal their second straight win.

"We turned it up offensively in the second quarter," St. Charles coach Larry Mishler assessed. "We got some steals and pushed the ball up the court. That was kind of the turning point for us."

Mishler said his girls also played a better defensive game in the second half to maintain the lead.

Jordan Mishler and Kaleigh Bashans led the 'Dawgs with 10 points apiece. Mishler also had seven rebounds and three steals, while Bashans had three boards and three steals.

Megan McSweyn added nine points with her five boards and two steals. Nicole Apsey and Jade Tribfelner each had five points and three assists. Brooke Braley hauled in six rebounds.

The Bulldogs finished the night shooting 33 percent from the field, but struggled at the free throw line. They hit 11 of 27 from the stripe.

"If we had shot better from the line, we would have put the game out of reach," Coach Mishler said.

"We're playing better now," he added. "We're starting to think we can win now, and we're getting a lot of people contributing. We're finally clicking."

The Bulldogs are 4-13 on the season, 3-8 in the Tri-Valley Conference West Division.

Bulldogs hold off late Huskie surge for 70-63 win

BRECKENRIDGE -- For three quarters Friday night, the St. Charles varsity cagers had the game comfortably in hand, but a fourth quarter scoring explosion turned the Tri-Valley Conference West Division contest into a barn-burner at Breckenridge.

The 'Dawgs led 24-8 at the end of the first quarter, and were up 38-18 at the half. A 10-10 tie in the third still saw the Bulldogs up 48-28 going into the fourth quarter.

That's when things got wild, with the host Huskies out-scoring the Bulldogs a whopping 35-22. But the St. Charles squad was able to hold on for the 70-63 win.

Dugan Roosa led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Tyler Nieman chipped in 12 points with five steals and three assists. Matt Schalow added 11 points with eight rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Mistake-prone Indians fall to Shepherd, 61-52

CHESANING - Turnovers played a major role in Chesaning's 61-52 loss to visiting Shepherd last Friday as Jason Danek's varsity boys basketball team squandered a 10-point halftime lead.

"Turnovers were the difference in the game," commented Danek, whose squad committed 27 miscues. "Our inability to work the ball into the post in the second half really hurt us."

Joe Bitterman and Cal Bishop were forces around the basket in the first half as the two combined to score 17 points, but the tandem only scored six points after intermission as the Bluejays' zone trap disrupted Chesaning's offensive game plan.

The Indians converted 50% of their field goal attempts, but turnovers limited Chesaning to just 46 shots on the night-not enough to fend off 44 second-half points by Shepherd. Another key factor in the final outcome was free throw opportunities. Chesaning made one of just two free throws in the game while Shepherd was afforded 18 charity tosses.

The Indians jumped out to a 16-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and carried a 27-17 advantage into intermission, but the Bluejays pumped in 20 third-quarter points against just 12 for Chesaning to close the gap to 39-37. Shepherd won the game by putting 24 more points on the scoreboard in the final stanza while limiting the Indians to 13.

Joe Devota led the Tribe with 23 points, grabbing seven rebounds along the way. Bitterman finished with a dozen points and nine boards and Bishop tallied 11 points and five boards.

The loss drops Chesaning to 4-7 in the TVC-Central and 9-7 overall.

Chesaning gals coast to easy hoops win, 59-14

CHESANING -Brooke Jastrzembowski scored a career-high 30 points to lead Chesaning's varsity girls basketball team to an easy 59-14 triumph over visiting Shepherd last Friday. The issue was never in doubt.

"Everybody on the team made a positive contribution tonight," praised Tribe coach Wayne Scanlon after the game. "Brooke obviously had a monster night, but everyone else also played well, especially (sophomore) Sabrina Aguilar who came off the bench and really sparkled."

Chesaning raced out to a 16-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and steadily increased its cushion the rest of the way. The Indians led 29-6 at intermission, 44-9 at the end of the third, and outscored the Bluejays, 15-5, in the final stanza to provide the final margin of victory.

Jastrzembowski was deadly from all areas, burying 5 of 6 treys, 4 of 6 two-pointers and 7 of 8 free throws. She also logged eight rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. Brooke Beckman and Katie Vincke each scored six points, with Beckman also recording seven boards and three steals. Aguilar had a solid floor game with two points, five assists and a pair of steals.

The Indians hit 21 of their 45 field goal attempts for a solid 47% average and the Tribe out-rebounded Shepherd by a 38-18 margin.

The win moves the Class B Honorable Mention Indians to 10-2 in the TVC-Central and to 15-2 overall.

Ram cagers back on winning track, beat LV, 64-59

OTISVILLE - Montrose's varsity boys basketball team found its shooting touch last Friday and hit host LakeVille with a second-half scoring barrage en route to a 64-59 comeback win.

Trailing by two points at intermission, the Rams surged past the host Falcons by scoring 27 points in the third quarter, building a big enough cushion to hold off a fourth-quarter rally by LakeVille.

"We looked to score more tonight and we came out with more energy," said Ram coach Rick Ustishen. "We had a lot of guys perform well tonight, including Adam Campbell, who played his best game of the year."

Three Rams reached double figures in scoring as Montrose scorched the nets, sinking 23 of 42 field goal attempts for a sizzling 55% average. Meanwhile, the Rams took good care of the basketball by committing just 11 turnovers in the game.

Preston Taylor scored 20 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Cory Hargraves contributed 17 points and 8 rebounds before going down with an injury midway through the fourth quarter. Campbell scored a career-high 14 points while also tallying three boards, two steals and a pair of assists. Cody Groulx recorded eight points and five rebounds, Keith Boswell had four points and Brandon Rose played a strong floor game with a point, two rebounds, six assists and four steals.
