Internet safety forum rescheduled March 5



CHESANING - The Chesaning internet safety forum that was cancelled this week due to another winter storm has been rescheduled. The Child Predators: Hidden Dangers on the Internet program will be held on Wednesday, March 5 at 6 p.m. in the Chesaning Middle School media center.

The Chesaning Union School District and professionals from the United States Attorney's Office are teaming up to help the community learn ways to keep young people safe as they navigate the World Wide Web.

Matthew Roth, Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, will address the dangers of the Internet and give parents the tools and information needed to keep their children safe and secure in cyberspace.

The forum will provide a valuable opportunity for parents and community members to learn about important issues including child exploitation, prevention and enforcement. Due to the subject matter, this program is for adults only.

The program is free and open to the public, including parents from neighboring communities. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee teams will take stage Friday

CHESANING - Audiences at Friday's Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee will be cheering on their friends and neighbors while helping to raise money for Chesaning school libraries.

The bee will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, February 22 in the Chesaning Middle School auditorium. ABC-12 Meteorologist and HealthFirst reporter Leslie LoBue will serve as moderator.

Twenty teams from local schools, businesses, civic organizations and churches will compete in the friendly war of words, plus an all-star team led by ABC-12 news anchor and reporter Josh DeVine.

Trophies will be awarded to the first and second place finishers, with additional prizes awarded for teams with the most team spirit and displays of creative spelling.

The family-friendly event is open to the public. Donations and a $1 admission per person will be accepted at the door. Concessions will be sold by members of several Chesaning Odyssey of the Mind teams as a group fundraiser.

All proceeds will be split between the libraries at Chesaning High School, Chesaning Middle School, and Albee, Big Rock and Brady Elementary Schools. Funds will be used to purchase new books, Accelerated Reader tests and other materials.

Deputies raid Oakley home

SAGINAW -- Saginaw County Sheriff Charles L. Brown advised that on Feb. 13, detectives from the sheriff's department executed a search warrant at 319 Parshall St., Apt. 1 in the Village of Oakley.

A quanity of cocaine and marijuana was seized, along with drug paraphenalia and currency, Brown said.

Three individuals were lodged at the Saginaw County Jail for possession with intent to deliver marijuana, possession with intent to deliver cocaine, and maintaining a drug house, Brown said.

The suspects were a 48-year-old male and a 26-year-old female from Oakley and a 29-year-old male from St. Charles. Formal charges are pending.

CPR Class to be held Feb. 27

NEW LOTHROP -- American Heart Healthcare Provider CPR class will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at Twin Township Ambulance, New Lothrop. Students will learn adult, infant and child CPR. Upon successful completion of the class, students will be issued a BLS CPR card.

Instructor for the class will be Keith Martin.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association, and any fees charged for such a course do not represent income to the Assocation.
