Reiber pinned Swan Valley's Jerry Flores in 1:32 of his title match. Wirgau pinned Brandan Bell of Swan Valley in 1:50 of their finals. Reiber improved to 41-1 on the season, while Wirgau moved up to 33-8. Josh Tithof finished third at 119 lbs., going 2-1 on the day. Scott Wirostek (130) and Michael Smith (140) each finished fourth. Swan Valley won the tournament with 172 points. Alma was second with 123, followed by Freeland and Bullock Creek at 122, Shepherd at 105, Ovid-Elsie at 100, Chesaning at 70 and Hemlock at 42.
Bulldog cheer gals struggle at DeltaPlex GRAND RAPIDS -- The St. Charles competitive cheer squad struggled last Saturday at the DeltaPlex competition in Grand Rapids. The cheering Bulldogs finished seventh in Division 4. They scored a 171.5 in the first round, a 157.505 in the second round, and a 264 in the third round. An eight point penalty gave them a 585.005 final score. Hudson led the field with a 696.658 (203.0, 199.158, 294.5) composite score. Pewamo-Westphalia was second with 688.786 (211.0, 215.286, 272.5, -10 penalty). Colon was third with 668.995 (197.0, 193.995, 278.0). Merrill finished fourth with 633.694 (194.5, 174.194, 265.0). Gobles was fifth with 626.704 (194.0, 168.204, 264.5). Norway was sixth with 606.190 (177.5, 166.190, 262.5). Schoolcraft was eighth with 570.654 (177.5), 148.154, 253.0, -8 penalty). The Lady Bulldogs will close out the regular season at Breckenridge on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. Regionals will be on Saturday, March 1, at 4 p.m.
Roxy's Restaurant to sponsor fund-raising meal for Montrose softball team MONTROSE - High school softball players will be waiting on tables as Roxy's Restaurant opens its doors on Monday, February 25 for a benefit softball meal. Roxy's is normally closed on Monday evenings, but the Montrose restaurant will be serving a selection of four entrees from 4 PM to 8 PM on that day. Roxy's staff will do the cooking, but the softball players will be doing the table work. A "Ram" blanket raffle will be held at the end of the night and several other prizes will be drawn. Proceeds from the evening will go towards helping Montrose's softball players finance their Spring Training trip to South Carolina in April. Check next week's Citizen for more details on the event. Bulldog wrestlers finish third at TVC tourney SAGINAW -- The St. Charles wrestlers finished third at the Tri-Valley Conference West Division tournament on Saturday, Feb. 9, at Michigan Lutheran Seminary. The Bulldogs racked up 133 points to trail team champion Ithaca (219) and St. Louis (193). Carrollton was fourth with 115 pts., followed by Seminary (106), Valley Lutheran (61), Breckenridge (15) and Merrill (14). All of the TVC squads finished in the same order in dual meets and the final league standings. St. Charles went 5-2 in TVC duals and 16-5 overall in the regular season. Eight Bulldog wrestlers earned all-conference honors in the tournament. Matt Moore won the 140 pound championship with a 4-0 decision voer Seminary's Ben Shaffer. Kyle Anderson (125), Chris Truckner (135) and Zach Weisbarth (145) were runners-up in their weight divisions. Brett Watts (112), Mike Spannagel (152) and Brian Halas (189) each took third, and Jake Nagel (130) also earned honorable mention honors with a fourth place finish. Jason Smith (171) and Jeff Bradley (215) added team points with pins. |
