Last-second bucket puts Tribe guys back on winning track ALMA - Cody Stoddard persisted and Chesaning's varsity boys basketball team persevered last Tuesday as the Indians captured a thrilling 55-53 win at Alma. Last-minute thrillers have become commonplace for Jason Danek's squad, but Tuesday's game went right down to the final second of play. Stoddard's late-game heroics were set into motion when Alma, which trailed throughout the fourth quarter, tied the game on a three-point play with under 40 seconds to go. The Indians held for the last shot and Stoddard drove to the hoop only to have his shot blocked. But the sophomore playmaker somehow recovered the loose ball and banked a soft seven-footer off the glass amid a sea of defenders to give his team a buzzer-beating win. "We played a very solid overall game against a tough league opponent on the road and I was happy with how hard we played and with the focus of the whole team," praised Danek. "Our team made plays down the stretch and Cody did a great job of sticking with it on that final play." The two teams fought to a 24-all deadlock at the end of the first half before the Tribe took a 42-34 lead heading into the last eight minutes of play. Chesaning connected on 22 of 51 shots from the floor for a solid 43%, including 6 of 14 from three-point range. The Indians committed 16 turnovers. Joe Devota scored 20 points, hauled down three rebounds and grabbed three steals to pace the Indians. Joe Bitterman added 16 points and five rebounds while Cal Bishop tallied nine points, 11 boards and three blocks. Stoddard finished with seven points, including his game-winning hoop at the buzzer. The win breaks a short two-game losing skein, which came on the heels of a four-game winning streak. Most of those games came right down to the wire. The win improves Chesaning's TVC mark to 5-7 and ups its overall record to 10-7.
