SADIE (HAUGHTON) KORF

of Chesaning

Age 86, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2008 at the Ovid Healthcare Center. She was born on November 28, 1921 in Brady Township, the daughter of Leroy and Linda Bates. She was married to Max Haughton, and he preceded her in death in 1950. She then married Herman Korf, and he passed away in 2004. Sadie had worked at Peet Packing Co. and Universal Electric. She loved to sew, knit and crochet, and won many awards. She had been a 4H leader and was active at church in the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school.

She is survived by her children, Kenneth (Donna) Haughton, of Corunna, Larry Haughton, of Clio, Maxine Coopersmith, of Lansing, Fred (Marge) Korf, of Chesaning; daughter-in-law, Carol Haughton, of Oakley; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Bates, of Brant, and Marie Bates, of Olympia, Wash. Those who have passed away include her son, Wayne Haughton, and 13 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 25, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church, Chesaning. Pastor Joel W. Thomford officiated, with burial at Easton Cemetery. GEORGE B. "JUNK" TOSKEY, JR.

of St. Charles

Age 83, was taken peacefully on February 21, 2008. He was born on September 25, 1924 in Saginaw, to George B. Toskey, Sr. and Alta Fern Baade. George was a patriot and proud veteran of World War II, having served in the 99th Construction Battalion of the Seabee Division of the United States Navy. George served from 1943 through 1946 while stationed in the Phillipines, Johnston Island, Hawaii, Wake and Guam. Following the war, George worked for General Motors for 44 years beginning at the AC Spark Plug Plant in Flint and finishing at the Central Foundry Division in Saginaw. He served as mayor and village president of St. Charles in the 1950s. George was an avid Michigan State University football fan, attending every home game and traveling to many away games with his family. He was also an avid fan and supporter of the St. Charles Bulldogs. George was a lifetime member of many clubs and organizations, including the VFW, the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, the Polish Falcons of America, the NRA the Brant Gun Club, GM Retirees, American Foundry Society and Wolverine Sportsman Club. George was extraordinarily proud of his children and his family and enjoyed traveling with them to Australia, Alaska, the Yukon, the Canadian Rockies and every state in the Union, finishing with Oregon and Washington in October, 2007. George especially enjoyed the travels which took him to the Seabee conventions across the country. George was truly a rich and endearing character who will be missed by his wife, his family, his bulldog Ernie and many, many friends.

George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Colleen Daly; his children, Bonnie Toskey (Dan Kinsey) of Lansing, Tina Samuels (Tom), of St. Charles, Jacob B. Toskey (Nancy), of Brooklyn, Andrew Toskey (Tracy), of Midland, Margaret Ann Lewis (Robert), of Bloomfield Hills, and Amy Curtis (Ron), of Tustin; and his 10 grandchildren, Jamie Samuels, of St. Charles, Jennifer Weeks, of Freeland, Ginny Marie Yuschak, of Grand Blanc, Elli Toskey, of Grand Blanc, Abby Toskey, of Brooklyn, Katie, Kelly and Kyle Toskey, all of Midland, and Brian and Hannah Lewis, of Bloomfield Hills. George was predeceased by his younger brother, Robert Toskey.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at Kendall Funeral Home, St. Charles. Rev. Dr. Sherry Parker officiated, with burial in Riverside Cemetery. Memorials May be made in George's name to City Rescue Mission, East Side Soup Kitchen or American Legion/VFW Post in St. Charles.

AMOS E. "HAP" WALTERS

of Montrose

Age 86, died Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at his residence. Amos was born on November 18, 1921 in Morrefield, W.V., to the late Amos and Anna (Burns) Walters. He had resided in the Montrose area since 1954. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the 1st Army entering Normandy on D-Day +3 and serving through the end of the war. He received the Purple Heart and several other commendations and medals. Amos married Ruthann J. Hartley on August 16, 1966. He was self-employed as a cement contractor and then employed with the Montrose Community Schools for 16 years. He was a member of the Montrose United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife, Ruthann; children, Dana (Jon) Bamberger, of Essexville, Norm (Carol) Gage, of Harrison, and Fred (Sherri) Gage, of Kensington, Md.; six grandchildren, Tiphanie and Christopher Hicks, Gavin and Ethan Gage, and Alexis and Katie Gage; one great-grandson, Dominic Stemmler; brothers, Paul (Mary) Walters, of West Virginia, and Lawrence (Virginia) Walters of Flat Rock; sisters, Catharine Riggleman, Dorothy Barr and Mary Susan Eye, all of West Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. Amos was also preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa; two brothers, Albert and Gene; and sisters, Betty and Helen. The family wishes to thank Avalon Hospice, Rev. Wayne Ferrigan, The Friends Who Care and family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 29, 2008 at the Montrose United Methodist Church. Rev. Wayne Ferrigan officiated, with burial at Montrose Township Cemetery with military graveside honors. MARTHA M. (AMMAN) HOOVER

of Chesaning

Age 94, passed away on Tuesday evening, February 26, 2008 at the Hurley Medical Center, Flint. Martha M. Amman was born on June 21, 1913 in Chesaning Township, the daughter of William and Mary (Tietz) Amman. She married Everette Lee Hoover on March 27, 1930. He preceded her in death in August, 1989. She had been residing in the Westfall AFC Home and lived many years on her farm in Chesaning Township. Martha was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, former member of the Daughters of Isabella and the church study club. She was a talented crocheter, made many quilts and loved doing crafts. She loved to sew, read, play cards, bingo and tend to her flowers.

Surviving are two sons, Everette J. (Mary Ellen) Hoover, of Chesaning, and Thomas Hoover, of St. Charles; five daughters, Rose Marie Gasper, of Au Gres, Patricia Robinson, of San Diego, Calif., Susan Devereaux, of Richmond, Va., Jeanette (Dave) Bell, of Au Gres, and Nancy (Harold) Knieper, of New Lothrop; 19 gradnchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Bertha Hart, of Oakley; one brother, William Amman, of Chesaning; and many nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by her husband; sisters, Agnes Emmendorfer, Mary Cline and Gertrude Richter; brothers, Irvin, Leo, August, Alphonse and John Hoover; a granddaughter, Julie Bell; and two sons-in-law, Robert Gasper and Bernie Robinson.

Funeral liturgy was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 29, 2008 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Richard Bokinskie officiated, with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. BARBARA I GUBBINS

formerly of Burt and Lake City

Age 79, passed away on Saturday morning, February 23, 2008 at the Westfall Adult Foster Care Home. Barbara I. Leach was born on January 6, 1929 in Burt, the daughter of Fred and Mae (McDonagh) Leach. She married Gene Gubbins, Sr. on July 19, 1947. He preceded her in death in April, 2004. Barbara was a homemaker.

Surviving are her children, Gene (Marilynn) Gubbins, Jr., of Burt; Connie (Jeff) Canole, of Lake City; Carol (Phil) Beckman, of Chesaning; Dave Gubbins, of Winter Garden, Fla., Cindy (Jeff) Kinsey, of New Lothrop, and Eliza (Mike) Wendling, of Chesaning; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Nellie Witherspoon, Betty Robishaw, Fay (Norm) Lewis and Freda (Gordon) Ivey. She was preceded in death by brothers, John, Lyle and Fred Leach, and sisters, Ella Leach and Nina Clark.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at the Walker-Martin Funeral Home, Chesaning. Pastor Doug Bassett officiated, with burial in the Lake City Cemetery. CLETUS C. TURNWALD

of New Lothrop

Age 86, passed away on Saturday morning, February 23, 2008 at the Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso. He was born on October 8, 1921 in Maple Grove Township, the son of Anthony and Mary (Dick) Turnwald. He married Wanda Malecki on October 8, 1949, and she survives him. Cletus served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the New Lothrop VFW Post and was a member of the John Deere Battalion. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church of Maple Grove and was a lifelong farmer. He enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda; five children, Barb Turnwald, of New Lothrop, Jim (Shirley) Turnwald, of New Lothrop, Don (Sandy) Turnwald, of Chesaning, Francis Turnwald, of New Lothrop, and Sharon (Wayne) Richardson, of Owosso; eight grandchildren; two brothers and one sister, Ted (Edith) Turnwald, of Chesaning, Frieda (Max) Walters, of Portage, and Richard (Bernadine) Turnwald, of New Lothrop; and one sister-in-law, Helen Turnwald, of New Lothrop. Cletus was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters, Ray Turnwald, Dorothy Soukup, William Turnwald, Rita Ziola, Herman Turnwald, Bernetta Hedrich and Rudy Turnwald.

PHILLIP E. "HAPPY JACK" THOMAS, JR.

of Owosso

formerly of New Lothrop and Harrison

Age 70, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at his home, surrounded by his family. Phillip Earl Thomas, Jr. was born on November 1, 1937 in Owosso to the late Bertha (McKinstrey) and Phillip E. Thomas, Sr. He married Shirley Ann Kerry on November 19, 1978 and she survives him. "Happy Jack" was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. He enjoyed sports and was a proud Pistons fan. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, enjoyed playing poker and euchre with his sons and grandsons and loved to play practical jokes. Phillip operated Thomas Small Engine Repair for many years, retired from V-8 Engine in 1987, and he also farmed.

In addition to his wife, Shirley, Phillip is survived by nine children, Mary Ann Gotts, of Harrison, Tim Thomas, of New Lothrop, Greg Thomas, of Chesaning, Deb (Bub) Newman, of New Lothrop, Billie (Larry) Mliton, of Durand, Tammy (Frank) Fisher, of Owosso, Matt Thomas, of Owosso, Traci Thomas, of Raleigh, N.C., and Phillip (Tricia) Thomas, III, of Owosso; 25 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley (Robert) Green, of Chesaning, and Dorothy Rinebolt, of Owosso; and one brother, Robert Thomas, of Owosso. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Whelpley-Martin Funeral Home, New Lothrop. Rev. David Fleming officiated, with burial at Elmwood Cemetery.
