NL spikers return to throne in GAC Blue Division

BURTON - After a year's hiatus the Genesee Area Conference Blue Division crown is back "home" in New Lothrop. Sheri Warner's Hornet spikers capped a perfect conference campaign with a convincing tournament championship win over arch-rival and defending champ Byron at Bentley High School a week ago Saturday to capture their sixth league title in the past seven years.

Three days after edging the Eagles in a regular-season ending dual meet, the Hornets breezed past Byron twice in last Saturday's tourney. New Lothrop stopped the Eagles 25-15, 25-10 in the semifinals an d breeze to a 25-17, 25-11 win over Byron in the championship tournament finals.

New Lothrop, 12-0 in the regular season and now 40-14-4 overall, opened the tourney with a 25-10, 25-9 win over host Bentley.

"The Blue Division title is back home where it belongs," is what my team told me after winning the tournament today," beamed Warner following her team's dominating performance. "Today meant a lot to these young ladies. It was about pride and about bringing the title back home.

This team can and should be very proud of what they accomplished," added Warner. "They played some great volleyball. As a team we hit for a .389 kill efficiency with only eight hitting errors on 175 attempts, and averaged 12.7 kills per game. We passed at 91.5 percent. Our serve percentage was a little lower than we'd like at 88.7 percent but I can't complain. These kids were absolutely feeling it at the line today. We served tough which caused our opponents some difficulties.

Now the goal is to carry this type of play into the district tournament (yesterday at Marlette)," noted the veteran Hornet head coach. "That's where our season begins."

Sabrina Besaw, Kayla Krupp, Alissa Krupp and Hilary Vincke were outstanding for the Hornets. Besaw chalked up 58 assists on perfect 141/141 setting. She also converted on 16/18 serves with a pair of aces to go with two blocks and seven digs.

Vincke recorded a team-high 29 kills on 52/54 hitting. She was 13/13 serving with an ace, nine digs and a block.

Alissa Krupp racked up 13 kills on 32/33 hitting. She added 28 digs on 15/16 passing and was 11/13 serving with one ace.

Kayla Krupp notched a dozen kills on 21/23 kill efficiency. She also converted 20/22 passes for 37 digs and was 27/29 from the service stripe with one ace and a block.

Katie Henige added seven kills on perfect 12/12 hitting. She also contributed three blocks, five digs and five ace serves on 24/27 serving.

Kayla Hall added eight kills on 30/32 hitting. She had four blocks, three digs and five ace serves on 26/30 serving.
