Post Prom Committee to host Mr. Union Pageant HILLARY DARLING The Tri-County Citizen CHESANING - Chesaning Union High School girls will escort 18 Mr. Union Pageant contestants to the stage on March 14. The role-reversal is part of a fundraising event for the 2008 Post Prom, where CHS boys will compete for a Chesaning title. The country-western themed event is designed as an entertaining fundraiser to support the 2008 Post Prom at Capitol Bowl in Owosso. "Its just a fun way to get the students involved," said Post Prom Committee member Ann Buck. The seniors will compete in semi-formal attire; jeans, t-shirts and cowboy hats; and a shorts and shirt portion of the contest. The contestants will also introduce themselves, perform a dance and complete a question and answer session. After an Ed Rehman's representative demonstrates how to tie a Windsor Knot, the Mr. Union hopefuls will be judged on their tie. The 2008 Mr. Union will be "crowned" with a western belt buckle and will choose either a $200 scholarship or $100 cash prize. Each participant will receive a $20 gas card. Throughout the week, students will be able to vote on the cutest baby pictures for 25 cents a vote. The winner will be announced during the awards and will receive the money from his votes. Eighteen seniors will vie for the Mr. Union title on Friday. Chris Dewey, the son of Mike and Margy Dewey, will be escorted by Sydney Pacek. Dewey has been involved in Basketball, Football, Student Council and Future Farmers of America. After graduation, he plans to attend Western Michigan University to study elementary and special education. Mike Rowe-a football player, student council and FFA member-will be escorted by Katie Vincke. The son of Chuck and Lori Austerberry, he plans on attending Western Michigan University to study mechanical Engineering. Devin Witt, the son of Roger and Valerie Witt, plans to attend the University of Michigan Ann Arbor to study naval architecture and marine engineering. The senior, escorted by Chelsie Lane, has participated in football, basketball, tennis and National Honor Society. Dave Hawes, the son of Ben and Heidi Sims and football, student council and FFA member, will be escorted by Megan Buck. His future plans include attending Central Michigan University to study athletic training. Joseph Bitterman, the son of Steve and Sharon Bitterman, is a four sport athlete-participating in football, basketball, tennis and baseball as well as NHS. The senior, escorted by Sabrina Aguilar, plans to attend Northwood University to play football and study accounting. Jonah Ebenhoeh, the son of Howard and Denise Ebenhoeh, plans to attend Ferris or Saginaw Valley State University to study tennis management or business. The tennis, soccer and student council participant will be escorted by Kelsey Kunik. The son of Steve and Carol Guzdial, Andrew Guzdial will be accompanied by Chelsea Kuchar. The senior has participated in cross country, basketball and track and plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University for a teaching degree after transferring from Delta College. Troy Weisenberger, escorted by Amanda Mort, is a football, FFA and basketball participant. The son of Michelle and Dale Weisenberger plans to attend Michigan State University to enter the electrical program. A Chesaning Association of Performing Arts, Project ROOTS, FFA and Auto Club member, Daniel Loeblein will be escorted in the pageant by Krystal Indlekofer. After graduation, Loeblein-the son of Daniel Loeblein and Pam McDunugh-plans to attend Delta College to later transfer to Kettering University. Nate Turner, the son of Kim and Jim Turner, will be accompanied by Casey Forstner. Turner, a football, track, wrestling and art club participant plans to attend Eastern Michigan University to study architecture. Zach Hersch, the son of Dale and Heidi Hersch, has been involved in football, NHS, Track, 4-H and Hockey. Escorted by Melissa Martinez, he plans to attend Michigan Tech University to study mechanical engineering. Angel Gomez, the son of Jose and Rebecca Zavula, will be escorted by Felisha Nathan. The CAPA participant plans to attend Delta College to study criminal justice. Charlie Birchmeier, the son of Doan and Carolyn Birchmeier, will be escorted by Dana Albosta. The senior has participated in football and plans to attend college. An Auto Club member and baseball athlete, Josh List will be escorted by Jenna Schneider. The son of Edward List and Margo Devereaux, he plans to attend Delta College to study welding engineering. Ricky Chrysler, the son of Lisa Lane and Rick Chrysler, will be escorted by Tiffany Frederick. The senior has participated in football and key club and plans to attend Western Michigan University to study education or go into the medical field. Cody Darling, the son of Jim and Tracey Darling, will be escorted by Brooke Jastrzembowski. Darling has played football and baseball for the Indians and is also a member of the FFA. After graduation, he plans to attend Delta College. CAPA member Jordan Lorencz, the son of Ted and Tammy Lorencz, will be accompanied by Caitlin Kelley. The senior plans to attend ITT Tech to become a computer programmer. Jaxon Wirgau is a four-sport athlete in football, wrestling, tennis and baseball who will be escorted by Lauren Cianek. The son of Carol and Greg Wirgua, he plans to attend Delta College to study sports broadcasting. Lisa Maike and Andrew Reger will host the 2008 Mr. Union Pageant. Mr. Union judges include local business people Lisa Greenfelder, Kathy Keit, Robin Lister, Denise Walworth and Sharon Sampson. The Post Prom committee's mission is to provide a safe post prom, this year the funds will go towards chartering a bus to take students from prom on the Michigan Princess steamboat to the post-prom event in May. Concessions will be available for purchase following the event. The pageant begins at 7 p.m. at the Chesaning Middle School auditorium; the doors open at 6:30. Tickets are $5, children 3 years of age and under are free. Tickets are available at the door or in advance at the high school office.
National Music Outreach Tour conducts classes for Montrose students MONTROSE - The Young Americans, a national music outreach tour with 45 years in the entertainment industry, began their voice, dance and performing arts 3-day workshop with Montrose students today. The workshop ends Tuesday, with a performance including both the students and Young Americans. The Young Americans years in the entertainment business include six Ed Sullivan shows on CBS-TV; two Bob Hope Specials, three Bing Crosby Specials on NBC-TV, 27 network shows for CBS-TV, NBC-TV and ABC-TV; Academy Award (Oscar) for Columbia Motion Picture "The Young Americans;" eight Goodwill tours to Japan and the Far East; six European tours; 10 albums/CD recordings; 12 National USA tours, 28 National Music Outreach Tours in 47 states and 16 international tours. Since the 1990s, YA has concentrated their efforts on their national music outreach tours, working in schools with youth. YA, a nonprofit, tax exempt educational institution founded in 1962, aims to strengthen music programs in schools and build self-esteem and self worth in students. The company of 40 performers and six staff members will give area 4th-12th grade students the opportunity to participate in classes on Television-Theatre-Stage expression, Vocal Techniques, Sound and recording technique, musical theatre, stage movement, vocal ensemble and performance workshops. Auditions to join the group are held after each Young American show. Out-of state students must graduate before joining the California-based institution. The two-hour performance concluding the workshops will take place in the Kuehn-Haven Middle School gym at 7:30. Tickets, available at the door, are $8 for adults and $5 for students/children.
NL Prom Committee Busy Bodies ask for Help NEW LOTHROP -- Six New Lothrop Juniors and their two advisors are working furiously to raise enough money in order to pay for their 2008 Junior/Senior Prom. The six students also referred to as the prom committee, consist of Ashley Root, Kelsey Gasper, Lauren Birchmeir, Hannah Wenzlick, Cody and Kyle Harris, and Gracie Theodore. As to coincide with their Hollywood theme, the prom committee is selling stars on their homemade Hollywood walk of fame as one of their numerous fundraisers. This year, New Lothrop's prom is being hosted at Zhenders in Frankenmuth and along the entrance to the dance room the purchased stars will read the names of businesses and families who have generously donated money. In order to purchase a Hollywood star, call the New Lothrop High School at 810-638-5054 and ask for Mrs. Devota or Ms. Parker. Another fundraising event coming up on Friday, March 14 at the New Lothrop Elementary school is a lock-in for kids in grades second-sixth. Permission slips will be passed out at the elementary school by their classroom teachers. If children from schools other than New Lothrop wish to attend, arrangements can be made by contacting the New Lothrop Elementary or Ashley Root at 989-845-3906. Root said, "I hope we get just as many kids as the last lock-in, because we had fun and I know they did too."
Saginaw County Fair Horse Dept. fundraisers held CHESANING -- Supporters of the Horse Department at the Saginaw County Fair, Chesaning,held a fundraiser event on Feb. 27. The eEvent, planned and directed by Kimberly Wahl, of Burt, was a spaghetti dinner. The dinner was held at the Richville American Legion Post 400 on Sanilac Road (M-46). Over 50 people enjoyed a dinner of spaghetti, meatballs, salad, garlic bread and desserts. The Saginaw County Horse Department Committee will begin to offer raffle tickets at the end of March for two items, with the winners being announced at the Saginaw County Fair. One of the items is a western saddle, donated by Diamond C Saddlery and is valued at $1,995. The other item is a twin/full-sized quilt, featuring horses, created by Jill Eischer of Off The Wahl Retreats, LLC in Reese and Judy Percy of Country Long-Arm Quilting in Birch Run. The money raised will be used for improvement projects for the Horse Department at the Fairgrounds - including a wash rack, an entry booth, arena improvements, etc. Anyone wishing to donate money - or wanting more information on purchasing raffle tickets - may contact Kimberly Wahl at 989-770-9903 or horsedept@hotmail.com. Donations will be greatly appreciated by all the people who ride and show horses at the fairgrounds - both adults and children.
Edwards appointed chief assistant prosecutor for Shiawassee County CORUNNA -- Sara Edwards has been appointed Shiawassee County Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, effective March 17. Randy O. Colbry, county prosecutor. Edwards has been an assistant prosecutor for the county since July 1, 1998. During this time she has handled high profile cases as well as countless less publicized but equally important cases involving the children and families of the community, which she considers her passion. Edwards is the current president of the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Shiawassee County, having served on that board for 10 years. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Child Advocacy Center, where over 450 child victims have been interviewed since its inception in 2004. Prior to coming to Shiawassee County, Edwards served on active duty in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps from 1993 to 1998, and then in the U.S. Army Reserves until she was honorably discharged in November, 2006 with the rank of major. While in the Army she held positions as prosecutor, defense attorney and civil attorney. Edwards graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1993. She lives in Owosso with her husband, Tom, and their three children. She will be sworn in as chief assistant on March 17 at 1:30 p.m. by 35th Circuit Court Judge Gerald D. Lostracco.
Our Lady Students participate in Jump Rope For Heart CHESANING - Our Lady School treated this past Valentines Day a little differently-students participated in Jump Rope For Heart and welcomed two guests to discuss heart health on February 14. Jump Rope For Heart is a national fund raising program that is sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Students enjoyed physical activities, including relays, obstacle courses and jump rope, while raising funds to support heart and stroke research. Students and staff raised over $2500 for the cause. The school invited Dietician Ashley Clark from Owosso Memorial and Dr. Luay Alkotob, a cardiovascular specialist from Covenant Health Care to talk to the children about heart health.
Shiawassee County food program accepting applications OWOSSO - Capital Area Community Services, Inc. (CACS), is currently taking applications for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), scheduled to begin on March 11. The program provides nutritious food, on a monthly basis, to low-income residents of Shiawassee County. Infants and children, pregnant, postpartum, and breast-feeding women (185% Federal Poverty Guidelines), and persons sixty years of age or older (130% Federal Poverty Guidelines), may be eligible. To qualify, individuals must live in Shiawassee County and meet program guidelines. Program income guidelines are as follows: Under 60 years of age (185% poverty);
(add $6,660 for each additional family member) 60 years of age and over (130% poverty); ïfamily of one $13,520 ïfamily of two $18,200 (add $4,680 for each additional family member) Food distribution will begin on March 11 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Morrice Senior Center, 101 W. Mason St. in Morrice and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Durand Eagle's Club, 5230 S. New Lothrop Rd. in Durand. Distribution will continue on March 12 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the CACS office located at1845 Corunna Avenue, Owosso. Please note the change of address and pick-up site.
