CHS cheer team D-3 state champs

Indians claim third crown in seven years

It was the Indian's third title since 2001 and fifth MHSAA crown overall. GRAND RAPIDS - Chesaning sent head coach Lisa Maike into retirement in style Saturday capturing the MHSAA Division 3 state competitive cheer championship for the third time in seven years.

The 18-member CHS team out-dueled defending state champ Remus Chippewa Hills to claim the title. Chesaning amassed a 3-round total score of 727.6 while Chippewa Hills earned runner-up honors with a 708.3. Grosse Ile finished third with 708.3.

Chesaning trailed 194.5 to 194 to top-ranked Comstock Park after one round but roared ahead to stay with a second round 220.6.

They led Chippewa Hills by 10 full points entering Round 3 and were flawless in scoring 311 points in the round.

Chesaning's title was its' fifth since 1997 under Maike who capped a brilliant 19-year coaching career with the win. The Indians were runners-up a year ago. Their other state titles came in 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2003. They were runners-up again in 2002.
