Mr. Union unites community to raise funds for Post Prom events Charlie Birchmeier named Mr. Union; Joseph Bitterman wins cutest baby Hillary Darling The Tri-County Citizen CHESANING - Eighteen Chesaning Union High School senior boys entertained an audience of about 250 people March 14 with the Mr. Union Pageant, a Post Prom fundraiser that raised laughter and funds and concluded by "crowning" Charlie Birchmeier with the 2008 Mr. Union belt buckle. The Friday event raised about $800, which Post Prom Committee Chair-person Valerie Witt said will probably go towards post prom prizes, including a flat-screen TV. "I think it was a big success, the kids had a lot of fun and I'd like to see it continue," said Witt. Dana Albosta escorted Birchmeier, the son of Dean and Carolyn Birchmeier, in the western-themed event. Birchmeier enjoys weightlifting and played for the Indian gridiron and baseball teams. After graduating, the senior plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University. Birchmeier has not yet declared his major, but he is considering obtaining a degree in physical therapy. Mr. Union opted to receive the $100 cash prize over a $200 scholarship. Each of the other participants received $20 gift cards for Marathon gas stations. A cutest baby contest also raised money for Post Prom events, with the contestants pictures attached to jars where money was placed for votes; Joseph Bitterman, the son of Steve and Sharon Bitterman, received the most votes for his baby picture. Bitterman, escorted at the pageant by Sabrina Aguilar, plans to play football and study accounting at Northwood University. Prior to the competition, the contestants were shown how to tie a Windsor Knot by an Ed Rehmanns and Sons Clothing representative. On pageant day, the contestants were judged on the appearance of their ties. A female classmate escorted each contestant onto the stage in formal dress for his introductions last Friday, followed by a question and answer session. The eighteen contestants then changed for a swimsuit portion of the pageant, where they told the audience and judges Lisa Greenfelder, Kathy Keit, Robin Lister, Sharon Sampson and Denise Walworth their favorite beach "pick-up line." The contestants then emerged in western garb and performed a line dance to the song "Boot Scootin' Boogie" by Brooks & Dunn before offering the crowd a western phrase. "Tying a tie was difficult and dancing was difficult, but the rest was pretty fun," said Mr. Union. Birchmeier said he wasn't planning on entering in the event until others told him he should try competing. Host Andrew Reiger announced Birchmeier, contestant 11, as the 2008 Mr. Union; Lisa Maike also hosted the event; Jerome Blakeslee and Marianne Martz coordinated lights and sound. The Chesaning Equestrian Club and Future Farmers of America provided the western props. Post Prom will be at Capitol Bowl in Owosso following Chesaning's May 10th Prom on the Michigan Princess steamboat. Students can enjoy bowling, video games, a DJ, prizes and food at the event designed to keep students safe after Prom. "I think [the pageant] went good," said Post Prom Committee member Ann Buck. "I thought it was fun and everyone that I talked to said they had a good time." The committee is also collecting bottle return slips from Frank's Super Market to go towards the Post Prom funds; slips will be collected until May 9th. |
