Nine vie for 2007 Montrose Blueberry Queen crown



MONTROSE - Nine Hill-McCloy High School juniors and seniors will compete for the Montrose Blueberry Festival Queen's crown on Saturday, March 31. The 2007 Montrose Blueberry Queen Pageant will take the stage of the Montrose Community Auditorium, starting at 6 p.m.

The contestants are competing for the honor of serving as the Blueberry Festival's royal ambassador during the annual festival and at parades and events throughout the state this year. The queen and her runner-up will welcome visitors to Montrose August 15-19.

Jim Kramer of radio station WKCQ will serve as master of ceremonies, and a slate of celebrity judges will be on hand to choose the 2007 royalty.

The queen will receive a $2,000 scholarship, with her runner-up awarded a $1,500 scholarship.

Admission to the pageant is $3 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under.

This year's contestants include:

Marian L. Boswell, the 18 year-old daughter of Marvin E. and Barbara L. Boswell. Marian is involved in basketball and SADD, and has been honored with a Young Women of Achievement Award.

She enjoys playing sports and working, and plans to attend Michigan State University in pursuit of a registered nursing degree.

Ashley Hebl, the 17 year-old daughter of Gloria and Keith Hebl. Ashley participates in many sports, including golf, softball, basketball and hunting. She has received a biology award, academic letter and an apprenticeship award.

Ashley's favorite hobby is scrapbooking. She plans to pursue a degree in forensic science after graduation from Hill-McCloy.

Chelsie Hurst, the 17 year-old daughter of Kelly and Frank Hurst and Gerald Potter. Chelsie currently serves as editor in chief of the high school yearbook and is also involved in the prom committee, technology club and the Help Wanted organization. She has received many academic honors, including an academic letter, President's Award for Academic Excellence, varsity letter, certificate of appreciation and honor roll status.

In her spare time, Chelsie likes to read literature, camp, sing, cook and dance. She plans to attend Palmer University in California, where she will study chiropractic medicine.

Samantha McCullen, the 17 year-old daughter of Dan and Carrie McCullen. Samantha has been involved in drama and softball, and was named freshman representative and a member of the homecoming court.

Samantha's hobbies include shopping, spending time with her friends, volunteering, working, fishing and babysitting. After graduating from Hill-McCloy in 2008, she will begin college studies at Mott Community College and then transfer to the University of Michigan.

Krystina Parks, the 17 year-old daughter of Dennis and Diana Parks. Krystina's extra-curricular involvements include sideline cheerleading, competitive cheerleading and track. She has received a varsity letter in both sports.

In her spare time, she enjoys cheerleading, track and gymnastics. Her future plans include attending Adrian University and pursuing a career as a criminologist.

Tiffany Peterson, the 16 year-old daughter of Kevin and Patricia Peterson. Tiffany is the president of her junior class, and served as the treasurer of her freshman and sophomore class. She also participates in softball and volleyball and has been honored for academic excellence.

Tiffany enjoys spending time with her friends and family, watching movies and mudding. She plans to earn a law degree at Michigan State University, with hopes of pursuing a career as a judge.

Nicholle Pierce, the 16 year-old daughter of David and Allison Pierce Jr. Nicholle has been involved in numerous high school activities, including cross country, drama club, bible study, track, jazz band, prom committee and the National Honor Society, in which she serves as secretary. She was honored with the English award as a sophomore, and has earned academic letters and pins, the American Legion Award and the Band Excellence Award.

Nicholle enjoys playing the piano and bass guitar and singing. She will attend the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, with plans to become a pharmaceutical chemist working in research and development.

Abi Shustock, the 18 year-old daughter of Michael and Nanette Shustock. A student in the ultrasound technician program the Genesee Skills Center, Abi is involved in numerous high school activities, including SADD, chamber choir, rockathon, volleyball, soccer and more. She has received awards for her involvement in choir, the science fair and spelling bee, a letter for athletics and is a member of the A-B honor roll.

In her spare time, Abi enjoys spending time with her family and friends, gardening, shopping, babysitting, reading and music. After high school, she plans to attend a local college.

Kaitlin Whitmire, the 17 year-old daughter of Don and Tami Whitmire. Kaitlin's high school involvements include varsity football cheerleading, varsity basketball and competitive cheerleading, National Honor Society and the prom committee. She has received an academic pin and letter, the MEAP scholarship, numerous cheerleading awards and was the January 2007 athlete of the month. She has been the captain of the varsity cheer squad since her sophomore year, serves as photo editor of the school yearbook and co-vice-president of the senior class.

Kaitlin's hobbies include spending time with her friends and family, shopping, swimming, snowmobiling, photography and playing board games. After graduating from Hill-McCloy with academic honors, she will pursue a business degree at a community college or university. She plans to continue working at Elga Credit Union.
