  • The Montrose Board of Education appointed a 19-member budget study committee to look into whether the district should seek additional an operating millage this summer, make more budget cuts or a combination of both. The district has been faced with financial problems largely resulting from Michigan's beleaguered economic situation, which has caused reductions and deferments in state aid.

  • In New Lothrop, the district's board of education put the wheels in motion for a survey of the district's staff, students and community members. The project will survey students and staff in school, and volunteers will help conduct a phone survey of local residents.

  • The old wooden plant at the Pillsbury Company facility in downtown Chesaning near the railroad tracks was slated for removal in the spring. Pillsbury representatives said the company would continue operating its silo plant, fertilizer complex, feed plant, scale and office.

  • Chesaning Village employees will receive a straight 25 cents per hour across-the-board wage increase. The measure was approved by the Chesaning Village Council, and will cover 14 employees, both union and non-union personnel.

  • Cowman's of downtown Chesaning advertised London Fog raincoats, just in time for April showers, while the Brass Bell Restaurant promoted its Easter buffet dinner.
