Saginaw County Emergency Management announces Skywarn training SAGINAW - The Saginaw County Office of Emergency Management will hold its spring Skywarn weather training, sponsored by the National Weather Service, on Thursday, April 10. The program-which begins at 6:30 p.m. at Covenant HealthCare's Lecture Theatre, 700 Cooper Avenue-is running in conjunction with the Saginaw County Citizen Corps monthly meeting. The free training is open to the public and does not require pre-registration. Skywarn is a nation-wide network of volunteer weather spotters who report to and are trained by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's NWS. These spotters report many forms of significant or severe weather such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail, heavy snow and flooding. The staff at each NWS Forecast Office is responsible for issuing local forecasts and Severe Weather Warning services for the county warning forecast area. Skywarn spotters provide an invaluable service by providing ground truth on the atmosphere that the NWS spotters observe from advanced radars, satellites and reporting stations. These spotters are the NWS's eyes and ears helping to provide better forecasts and severe weather warnings. The NWS and Skywarn spotters work together to save lives. The program will offer basic and advanced training techniques to become an effective volunteer spotter through an interactive presentation that will last about two and a half hours. There will also be a drawing for a free programmable NOAA weather radio, valued at $49.99, to those who attend. For more emergency preparedness information, visit www.saginawcounty.com/emd.
