Chesaning pool renovation nears completion

Project operating under budget

CMS POOL NEARING COMPLETION - Tile in the deep end of the Chesaning Middle School pool was completed this past Thursday and Friday by workers from Angelo Barduca Ceramic, Marble and Stone, of Novi. The construction site of the facility, which is located at the Chesaning Middle School, was abuzz with activity this past week as workers wrap up many different areas inside the facility including tiling the deep end, painting, and electrical systems.
CHESANING - The good news is the Chesaning Union School District's pool renovation project is nearing completion. The even better news is the project is coming in under budget allowing for some of the "wish list" items that were thought to be impossible.

Installation of the new air handler system and the translucent panels, construction of the east addition, the new atrium, the new steel beams and steel decking that support the west (deep end) deck, installation of the new filtration system, and the entire mechanical system have all been completed.

The construction site of the facility, which is located at the Chesaning Middle School, was abuzz with activity this past week as workers wrap up many different areas inside the facility including tiling the deep end, painting, and electrical systems.

And according to the project's Construction Manager, Bill Pearson of RC Hendrick and Son, the project is coming in under budget allowing for some of the items that originally did not fit into the budget.

The shower rooms have been stripped and repainted, and new shower columns have been installed. Benches will be installed along the length of the south wall for use by swimmers.

"We were able to renovate the shower rooms which were in really bad shape and we're putting in $10,000 worth of benches that we didn't think there would be money for," Pearson noted.

The original target date for completion of the project was set for March 31. According to Pearson the project experienced slight delays due to material and equipment orders, and also the availability of the specialized contractors necessary on a project like this.

"Some of these contractors, like the gunite contractors who poured the pool walls and the ramp, are so specialized, and there are only a handful of them in the state, we have to wait our turn," said Pearson.

The new air handler system was the cause of another slight delay.

"The air handler is an enormous piece of equipment and took longer to arrive than originally projected," he said.

As long as there are no major hitches, Pearson said the project should be complete by April 16.

This week crews plan to complete the handicap ramp and tile the surface of the west (deep end) deck. Last on the list is installing the doors to the new atrium and putting the final layer of asphalt on the parking lot.

The district is planning a grand opening for the pool facility in May.
