Chesaning JV gals sweep softball twinbill Chesaning's JV softball team swept Central Montcalm in a doubleheader last Monday at home, 11-5 and 16-1. Paige Robart threw a one-hitter in the first game and Chantel Amman spun a no-hitter in the finale to lead the Indians to victory. Krystal Hernandez had three hits and Megan Newton ripped a pair of safeties in the opener while Whitney Pacek recorded three hits in the nightcap. The wins improve Chesaning's record to 2-2 for the season.
Ram JV diamondmen split with Genesee Montrose gave up six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to lose an 11-10 decision at Genesee last Monday before pounding out an 8-0 triumph in the nightcap behind the shut-out pitching of Brandon Rose. Ricky Genson, Trevor Adams, Frank Demarse and Travis Tekiele had big hits in the top of the fifth inning of the opener as the Rams scored nine times before the Wolves rallied in the bottom of the frame to capture the win. In the second game, Genson, Cody Hodge, Adams, Blake Hitchcock, Rose, Koby Stauffer and Anthony Emmendorfer each had hits to lead the Rams to victory. The Ram JVs now stand at 3-1 for the season.
Ram diamondmen romp to sweep of Genesee MONTROSE - Seth Hursh twirled a no-hitter in the opener and Mike Foster spun a two-hit gem in the nightcap as Montrose's varsity baseball team cruised to a 13-0, 10-1 sweep of visiting Genesee last Monday. In the five-inning mercy win, the Rams scored in every inning while Hursh struck out eight and walked four. Jon Hall had a pair of singles, stole five bases and scored four times to pace the offense. Foster earned his first win by tossing the first five innings. He allowed five base on balls, but struck out four and allowed no runs. Hursh had a pair of hits and Nick Reinhardt knocked in a pair of runs with a single. The Rams benefitted from 19 walks over the course of the doubleheader.
NL softball gals lose twice to Byron BYRON - New Lothrop's varsity softball team battled one of the state's top pitcher's to the wire before finally dropping a doubleheader to Byron on Friday, April 13. It was the season opener for the Hornets, while the host Eagles already had six games under their belts. Jim Lahmann's squad committed five errors in the 7-3 opening loss before playing much better on defense in the second game, a classic 1-0 contest between the two GAC-Blue powerhouses. Byron's Jade Fulton won both ends of the doubleheader, tossing a six-hitter while striking out 16 in the first game and spinning a one-hitter with 15 strike outs and one walk in the finale. Justine Vincke socked a two-run homer in the opener while Nichole Ebenhoeh had the lone Hornet hit in the nightcap. Amanda Wendling was the losing pitcher in Game One, yielding eight hits while striking out a pair of Eagles. Kayla Knieper twirled a one-hitter in the second game, striking out three and walking two. Byron scored the only run of the game in the first inning, capitalizing on a base on balls and the only two Hornet errors of the contest.
Chesaning sweeps Ithaca, Montcalm in softball action Chesaning's varsity softball team won four straight home contests in recent diamond action, pounding out a 10-5, 15-8 sweep over Ithaca on Friday, April 13 before clobbering Central Montcalm, 20-0, 15-3 last Monday. Beth Kensrud won both decisions against Ithaca, throwing a three-hitter in the opener. Cassie Harris slugged a pair of home runs and Megan Buck delivered a grand slam for the Indians, who won their first game of the season, thanks to a seven-run outburst in the fifth inning, which erased a 3-1 deficit. In Game Two, the Indians once again rallied from behind, scoring five times in the third to take an 8-6 lead that they never relinquished. Amanda Mort slammed a home run among her three hits, while Jill Hunt and Buck each had a homer and a single in the contest. Kensrud also helped her own cause with a round-tripper. Against Central Montcalm, Devon Burznyski's squad put both games away early, scoring nine times in the opening frame of the first game and plating 16 runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Kensrud was once again the winning pitcher in both contests tossing a one-hitter and a three-hitter in the two mercy-shortened games. Mort paced the Indian attack in the first game, ripping four of the 15 Tribe hits. Lindsay Harmon, Harris and Ashley Oliver each had a pair of hits. In the finale, Hunt hit a home run, the ninth of the season for the Indians, and Harris had three safetiers. Harmon also had a pair of hits for Chesaning, which mercied Montcalm in just three innings. The string of wins improves Chesaning's overall record to 4-2 on the season.
Tribe kickers lose three straight Chesaning's varsity soccer team lost three contests recently, dropping a 7-0 decision at home to Corunna on Friday, April 13 before losing twice last week to Saginaw Valley Lutheran and Hemlock. On Monday, the Indians turned in a solid performance in the first half, trailing Valley Lutheran just 1-0 at intermission before running out of steam in the second half and eventually losing, 6-0. Valley Lutheran entered the contest undefeated and unscored upon. Hillary Darling had nine saves in goal for Chesaning. On Thursday, the Tribe traveled to Hemlock where they fell behind 2-0 at halftime and eventually lost a 3-0 contest to the Huskies. Darling had four saves between the pipes for the Indians.
'Dawgs take bite out of Tribe in softball showdown CHESANING - Sammi Mason pitched and hit her team to victory in the first game as St. Charles went on to sweep a softball doubleheader at Chesaning last Wednesday by identical 8-2 scores. Mason struck out 13 and allowed just four hits while collecting three hits of her own in the opener. Rachel Lichon and Sara Mead also recorded three hits apiece for the 'Dawgs while Lexy Burch and Jade Tribfelner had a pair of hits apiece. Ashley Oliver and Lindsay Harmon each had RBI hits for the Indians, who were only able to score single runs in the second and sixth innings. Meanwhile, St. Charles scored twice in the first, fourth and seventh innings and added single runs in the third and sixth. "Sammi pitched a nice ballgame and was in control the whole time out on the mound," assessed 'Dawg mentor Todd Halcomb. "It was nice to get a win after a poor showing against Swan Valley on Monday." Sara Mead spun a five-hitter in the nightcap and the 'Dawgs pounded out 11 hits to post the 8-2 win. Mead helped her own cause by recording three hits and two RBI's. Toni Madden counted a seventh-inning home run, the first of her varsity career, among her three hits while Burch contributed a pair of hits and a stolen base to the offensive assault. Amanda Mort and Megan Buck each had two hits for the Indians, who played the 'Dawgs to a 2-2 tie before yielding three runs in the fourth. The Indians hurt themselves by committing five errors in the nightcap. "In the first game, we chased a lot of pitches at the plate. Mason has nice movement on the ball, which kept us off balance," Indian head coach Devon Burzynski commented. "We hit better in the second game, but had a lot of line drives that were caught." The pair of wins improve St. Charles' record to 6-2 on the season while the Indians drop to 4-4 overall.

Kaleigh Bashans was the winning pitcher in the first game. She was also the hitting star, socking four hits, knocking in three runners and scoring four times. Rachel Katch slugged three doubles to plate three runners and scored twice. Megan Newton had three hits and scored twice for the Indians, while Whitney Pacek knocked in three runners with a pair of hits. Shay'la Byron was the winning pitcher in the second game, giving up just two hits while registering a pair of hits herself. Bashans and Ashley Fiting also had two hits apiece while Ashley Wachowicz logged a home run and three RBI's for the winners. The Lady Bulldogs now stand at 7-1 on the season while the Tribe drops to 2-4.
Error-prone 'Dawgs drop softball twinbill to tough Swan Valley THOMAS TOWNSHIP - St. Charles' varsity softball team was unable to shake off the rust from Spring Break as the 'Dawgs committed a whopping 17 errors during a doubleheader loss to tough Swan Valley last Monday. Todd Halcomb's squad entered the contest with an unblemished 4-0 record, but the host Vikings capitalized on 'Dawg miscues throughout the day to race to a 7-1, 13-3 sweep. "We got beat by a very tough pitcher and we lacked confidence coming off a two-week lay-off," commented Halcomb. "It's not an excuse, but it is the reality of the situation. At the same time, we have to give Swan Valley credit-they are very good." The Lady Bulldogs managed just four hits throughout the course of the doubleheader, but still found themselves in a 1-1 tie before the Vikings broke loose for three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sammi Mason yielded just four hits in the opener, but eight walks and seven errors opened the gate for Swan Valley. In the nightcap, Sara Mead had a pair of hits and Tiffany Reinke socked a double, but it was not enough as Swan Valley scored six times in the second en route to the 13-3 triumph. Mead took the loss on the mound. The losses dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 4-2 for the season.
Hornets mercy Wolves in softball twinbill GENESEE - New Lothrop's varsity softball team wasted little time in disposing of Genesee last Thursday as the Hornets romped to a pair of mercy-rule wins over the host Wolves, 16-0, 15-0. Jim Lahmann's crew scored in all eight innings of the two shortened contests. In the opener, the Hornets pounded out 17 hits while Kayla Knieper held Genesee to just one safety over the five-inning contest. Courtney Praski's three-run homer in the top of the second keyed a seven-run frame that erased any doubt of the game's outcome. Chelsea McAllister, Justine Vincke and Dani Birchmeier each registered three hits for the Hornets. McAllister and Britney Coon each had three hits in the nightcap while Knieper and Praski added a pair of hits apiece. Praski recorded four RBI's. Amanda Wendling picked up the win on the mound, yielding two hits and two walks while striking out five. The pair of wins improve NL's record to 3-2 in the GAC and 4-2 overall.
Chesaning Diamondmen edge Bulldogs in slug fest CHESANING - Chesaning's varsity baseball team scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to win an 8-7 marathon over visiting St. Charles last Thursday as Hayden Kunik pitched three innings of scoreless relief to pick up the decision for the Indians. In the seesaw contest, the Indians responded to a four-run third inning by the Bulldogs by plating four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. After the 'Dawgs scored twice in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 7-all, the Tribe finally pushed the winning run across the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Cody Haughton started for the Tribe and was relieved in the fifth by Kunik, who yielded just two hits, but walked five over the final three innings. Brent Devereaux and John Hoover each had two hits for Chesaning, which recorded eight hits in the contest. Hoover knocked in a pair of runs, as did Kevin Bitterman. St. Charles rapped nine hits, but the 'Dawgs were hurt by four errors and six base on balls. The win improves Chesaning's record to 2-1, overall.
Ram JVs split baseball doubleheader with Genesee Montrose's JV baseball team lost a 7-6 cliffhanger before rallying for a 12-7 triumph in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Durand last Thursday. Brandon Rose had two of the five hits for Montrose in the opener. Blake Hitchcock, Trevor Trueblood and Anthony Emmendorfer also hit safely for the Rams. In the second game, Rose picked up the win on the mound with relief help from Cody Hodge. Hitchcock had two of the six Montrose hits while Hodge, Ricky Genson, Rose and Koby Stauffer also had hits for Montrose. Genson knocked in a run with his double. The split moves Montrose's record to 4-2 on the season.
