"We talked before the game about how we wanted to set the tone at the beginning and that is what we did. We got a few goals as a result of our hustle, and we played a smart, disciplined game," praised Ram mentor Jason Perrin. "Durand returned basically their whole team and we split with them last year. So for these girls to go out and beat a much more experienced team was great. I think it was our best game of the year." Montrose gained valuable experience against top-notch competition on Saturday, April 21 when they took on some of the best teams in the state. The Rams turned away host Columbia-Central by a 2-1 margin in the opening game of the tournament, scoring the winning goal on a 35-yard blast by Garza into the upper right hand corner of the net in the second half. The game was tied at 1-1 at intermission, thanks to a goal from sophomore Casey Lake. Brianna Giffel preserved the victory with an outstanding save late in the game. Trenton scored a quick goal in Montrose's second game of the day, but the Rams controlled play for the rest of the half until Trenton capitalized on a turnover to take a 2-0 advantage just 27 seconds before the break. Trenton scored twice in the second half to remain unbeaten for the season, and the Trojans would go on to win the six-team tournament. In a battle for third place, the Rams dropped a 3-1 verdict to Jackson Christian. Jackson broke open a scoreless tie with three consecutive goals in the second half before sophomore Tarynb Handyside scored with five minutes to go in the game. "We battled all day long and I'm proud of our team. We talked after the tournament and we all agreed that we learned a lot as a team and that this experience will make us stronger later on." Concluded Perrin. The Rams now stand at 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the GAC.
