The St. Charles sophomore recently won $500 for her short story at the Hemmingway event in the Temple Theatre on April 29.

"I think that, now, I have more faith in myself," the sophomore said, who wasn't expecting to take home the first place prize.

Schramm said her story, which took her about a week and a half to finish, was about the environment she lives in, how it has affected her life and how it could affect her future.

Schramm, the daughter of Sheree Schramm of St. Charles, is interested in going into psychology, but hopes to write a little as well.

The contest, sponsored by The Saginaw News, The Bay City Times and The Midland Daily News, honored five other young writers in essay and short story categories
