"I think it took us a half of soccer before some of our girls realized we were right there with them," said Perrin. "Taryn and Alexis are starting to feel comfortable and played perhaps their best soccer of the year. Our defense was solid as well." Coach Perrin said the game's most valuable player was Tarah Diem. "Tarah usually plays forward, but we gave her a special assignment to mark their top player and she absolutely shut her down. She does anything we ask of her and never complains." The Rams went 2-1 at the Brooklyn Columbia Central Tournament on April 26, opening with a 4-2 loss to host Columbia Central. The teams traded goals at 1-1 and 2-2—with Montrose goals from Handyside, off an Alexis Garza assist, and Shalynne Barron, with a header off a Handyside corner kick—before Columbia Central pulled away late in the second half. "Columbia Central is a quality team and we didn't have an answer for their number four, who scored all four goals," Perrin said. Montrose responded with the same final tally against Adrian—only this time with the Rams on top, 4-2. The Rams took a 4-1 lead into halftime with goals from Garza, Kayla Setzke, Jessica Jajey and Diem and assists from Rachel Wing, Setzke and Garza. In the third/fourth place match, the Rams took Springport by a score of 7-0. Jajey took the first goal with a hat trick. Setzke picked up two and Handyside and Barron each picked up a goal. Handyside had an assist and Diem had two. "We played well most of the day and it was great to get some of our younger players some quality time and tournament experience," Perrin commented. Finishing the tournament at third, Handyside and Garza made the All-Tournament team. Montrose returned to GAC action on Tuesday, defeating Lakeville 5-1. Two minutes into the match, a Garza-Diem pair scored on a breakaway. Three minutes later, the pair completed another. With less than ten minutes to the half, Casey Lake passed to Diem,, who scored with a hat trick. Five minutes into the second half, Handyside finished a shot off a Barron throw-in. After a Lakeville goal, Garza took a Lake pass and scored for the final tally, 5-1. "We capitalized well today," Perrin said, "I wasn't happy with the way we played in the first half, but we were finishing the opportunities we had. We played with more energy in the second half and fixed some of our problems." The Rams' record is now 9-3-1 and 4-1 in the GAC. They compete at Laingsburg on Tuesday and host Byron at 4:30 on Thursday. |
