Rams' GAC streak ends with Durand, 2-1

DURAND -The Railroaders rammed Montrose soccer's GAC record with the first conference loss of the season in the April 17 match, 2-1, a score then matching their GAC 2-1 record.

Coach Jason Perrin said the team played well for about 75 of the match's 80 minutes; Durand scored their two less than five minutes from each other. "Durand took advantage of their opportunities and good teams will be able to do that," he said.

The Rams controlled most of the first half play and netted the first score eleven minutes into the contest, when Taryn Handyside's corner kick deflected off a Durand player and into the net. But with just under five minutes to the half, the Railroaders responded with a cross and redirection into the goal. Just a minute later, Durand finished off their win, converting on a corner kick for the goal that would carry them through for a win.

Perrin said the entire team showed heart and desire in the tough loss; he said Shalynne Barron, Rachel Wing and Kayla Setzke all played well.

"I feel real bad for the girls because that's a game they deserved to win," he said. "At the half we were in shock a bit because we had controlled play and then all of a sudden we were down 2-1. I learned, and the team learned, a lot about themselves with how we responded." The Rams host Lakeville on Tuesday and Caro on Thursday. Both matches begin at 4:30 p.m.
