MASA's Region 4 encompasses more than 40 Michigan school districts in Bay, Arenac, Clare, Gladwin, Midland and Saginaw counties. Region 4 President Bob Kjoldhede, superintendent of Beal City Public Schools, presented the award. The honoree's wife, Claudia, and several of his former school co-workers were in attendance. Rhode was recognized for maintaining strong leadership, creativity, professionalism, and community involvement after retirement. He was lauded for his people skills and ability to draw the best out of those with whom he works. "People love him for his sense of humor, caring attitude, and ability to make every project a journey that included everybody," said Cheryl Hahnenberg, who served as Chesaning High School principal under Rhode's leadership before going on to her own superintendent spot in Chippewa Hills. "Bob continues to volunteer as the captain of the Chesaning Showboat. He and his wife, Claudia, were instrumental in planning and building the Cole Park playscape, which has been enjoyed by thousands of families," she added. Rhode's personal and professional accomplishments continue to be an inspiration to Chesaning educators and administrators, including current Chesaning Superintendent Kathy Stewart. "I have such respect for Mr. Rhode for his contributions to our school district and the broader community. He sets an amazing example through his commitment to his family, church, school and community. If we could all be a little more like him, the world would be a better place," she said. MASA is a statewide association that represents the superintendents and first-line administrators of Michigan's local and intermediate school districts. The mission of MASA is to develop leadership and unity within its membership to achieve the continuous improvement of public education in Michigan.
