Local News PUBLISHED:
The project grew out of a desire for a local homecoming rally for five 2005 St. Charles High School graduates who recently returned home after several months in Iraq. Jeremy Simerson, Mark Parson, Kyle Smith and Tony Kozlowski were part of a Saginaw Marine Reserve unit, and Adam Yurgens served in a Grand Rapids unit. The Saginaw unit received a heartwarming welcome home in Buena Vista on April 29, when crowds packed a high school to show their appreciation. A group of St. Charles parents wanted to share that experience with their hometown friends and neighbors. Linda Parson and Sherri Simerson took their idea to St. Charles school officials and the project blossomed, Parson said. In addition honoring the Iraq veterans, the event will salute 16 St. Charles graduates from 2000 to 2006 who went on to serve in the military. A family member will represent those who cannot attend the rally, as some are serving out of the country. During the program, recognition will be given to all servicemen and women in attendance. Parson said organizers are excited about giving hometown soldiers their moment in the spotlight and gathering the community together for a patriotic celebration. "Everyone has been so kind to our families. When my son was in Iraq, I couldn't go to the grocery store without people stopping me and offering their support or asking about sending care packages and letters. It was phenomenal," she said. Small flags will be available for participants wishing to make a donation to the Marine League. Proceeds will support wounded soldiers and their families.
