On Monday, a disastrous second inning put the Lady Bulldogs in a 7-0 hole before Todd Halcomb's crew mounted a valiant comeback attempt, falling just short, 7-5. St. Charles rallied for two runs in the third and three in the fourth, but couldn't capitalize on scoring opportunities over the final three innings of play. The 'Dawgs outhit the three-time league champion Huskies, 8 to 7, but still came up short.

Sammi Mason took the loss on the mound, striking out eight and walking three. Mason and Lexy Burch each collected a pair of hits for St. Charles.

St. Charles cost itself any chance of victory in the second game, committing nine errors during a 12-3 drubbing at the hands of the Huskies. Mason took the loss on the mound while Sara Mead and Jade Tribfelner had the only hits for the 'Dawgs.

St. Charles and Valley Lutheran hooked up for a pair of thrillers on Thursday as the Lady Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the third and hung on for a 2-1 win. Natalie Trier opened the decisive frame with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tribfelner and scored on a double off the bat of Rachel Lichon. Mason knocked in the winning run with a single.

Mason was sharp on the mound, allowing just two hits while striking out 11 and walking none.

"Sammi pitched one of her best games of the year and had the Chargers handcuffed at the plate," praised 'Dawg coach Todd Halcomb. "We're still trying to get more production from our bats and not take so many called third strikes, but our defense was solid behind Sammi and it was a well-played game."

Sara Mead pitched a five-hitter in the nightcap, striking out six and walking one, but the Lady Bulldogs couldn't push across a run and lost, 1-0. Toni Madden had a pair of hits for St. Charles and Mead had a safety as St. Charles could only muster three hits.

"They took advantage of a mistake and scored the only run of the game, while we often leave scoring chances on the bases," remarked Halcomb. "We need to learn how to be better situational hitters by not being such free swingers with runners in scoring position. In clutch situations, we need to be sure to put the ball in play. It's little things like that which make the difference between a good team and a great team."

St. Charles now owns a 15-10 overall record and stands at 3-5 in the TVC.
