Bulldogs rally in nightcap to grab baseball split with Breckenridge

BRECKENRIDGE - St. Charles surrendered four runs in the top of the first inning before freshman hurler Dugan Roosa settled down and the Bulldogs rallied to grab a 10-7 TVC-West win over host Breckenridge last Monday.

Roger Henninger's Bulldogs scored four times in the bottom of the second and plated six more in the third to salvage a split in the doubleheader. St. Charles dropped the opener to the Huskies, 7-4.

"The opening game came down to three defensive plays that we did not make and allowed four runs to score," assessed Coach Henninger. "Nonetheless, it was a well-played game and I am proud of the way Ryan (Humpert) pitched and the way our reserves filled in."

The 'Dawgs jumped out to a 2-0 lead early before Breckenridge scored single runs in the second and fourth and went ahead for good with two in the bottom of the fifth. Humpert pitched five innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three and walking four. Brian Halas stroked three hits while Dugan Roosa had a triple and an RBI. Mike Falkenberg also hit safely for the Bulldogs.

Roosa, just a freshman, struggled through a shaky first inning in the second game before finishing strong for his third consecutive complete game.

"I thought our team showed great composure and Dugan really settled in from the fourth inning on," noted Henninger.

Roosa scattered six hits while striking out three and walking six. Meanwhile, Halas continued his lusty hitting, rapping out a single, double and knocking in two runs in the nightcap. Spencer Davenport also collected a pair of hits, driving in a pair of runs in the process. Falkenberg, Roosa and Kyle O'Bryan each hit safely for the 'Dawgs, who now stand at 4-2 in the TVC and 8-9 overall.
