NL sackers knock off Martians

Dennis twirls 3-hitter in Hornet's 4-3 victory

NEW LOTHROP - Levi Dennis pitched 6-1/3 innings of 3-hit ball but it took a rally in the bottom of the seventh to propel New Lothrop's varsity diamondmen to their biggest victory of the spring campaign. Dennis fanned three and walked two before yielding in the top of the seventh to reliever Keith Perizzola who would wind up the winner.

The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead but Goodrich got a run off Dennis in the sixth and two more in the seventh to tie the game before Perizzola finally retired the side. New Lothrop won it with a run in its half of the seventh.

"This was a well pitched game by both teams," assessed Hornet coach Chris Good. "We had too many errors (5). We are making our pitchers worker harder than necessary."

Jordan Brown ripped a triple and knocked in a run while Austin Krupp collected a run-scoring single.

The Hornets completed a sweep of the Martians with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.

Austin Krupp earned the victory hurling five innings of 4-hit ball. He fanned one and walked two. Roger Emmendorfer picked up the save. He struck out a pair but did not give up a hit in two innings on the mound.

"This was another well pitched game," stated Good. "We have to be more selective at the plate though. Different counts call for different approaches at the plate. We are too aggressive early, swinging at bad pitches and putting ourselves in a hole. When we do have a hitter's count we are too passive."

Brown continued his torrid hitting going 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Senior catcher Brad Rivette also collected a pair of hits and two RBIs. Rivette gunned down three base runners attempting to steal.
