Sizzling St. Charles advances in softball district play

ST. LOUIS - St. Charles rode the strong right arm of Sammi Mason to victory last Tuesday, edging past Ithaca, 2-1, in pre-district softball action at St. Louis.

Mason struck out 14 Yellowjackets while yielding just one hit and one walk. Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth on Rachel Lichon's RBI sacrifice bunt. Jordan Mishler and Toni Madden had key hits in the sixth to give St. Charles an insurance run, which the 'Dawgs would need, as Ithaca scored its only run in the bottom of the last inning.

Todd Halcomb's team could muster just three hits in the contest. Madden and Mason each had a hit, in addition to Mishler's game-winning RBI hit.

"We played focused and battled the whole game," assessed Halcomb. "The only negative was that we didn't take advantage of a couple of early scoring opportunities, but I'm proud of the girls and the way they hung tough."

The win improved St. Charles' record to 27-10 as the Bulldogs moved forward in district play on Saturday.
