Rams win district baseball crown

BURTON - Montrose's varsity baseball team used two big innings to pull out a hard-fought 9-5 victory over Chesaning in the Bentley district semi-finals before winning the district title with an easy 20-1 triumph over Hamady in the championship contest on Saturday, June 2.

The title game was a mere formality as the Rams scored 19 runs in the bottom of the second to secure the three-inning mercy win over the Hawks. Nathan Ply was the winning pitcher, surrendering just two hits, while three Rams had multiple-hit performances at the plate. Adam Campbell socked three hits, including a double while Jon Hall and Dan Kagey collected two hits apiece.

The semi-final contest between the Rams and Chesaning provided much more drama.

Montrose took a 4-0 lead by scoring three times in the top of third inning against Chesaning, only to watch the Indians retaliate with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Doubles by Ron Hart and John Hoover keyed the Tribe uprising. The game remained close until Montrose pushed four runs across the plate in the fifth and added another marker in the sixth. Chesaning scored once in each of the last two innings.

Seth Hursh persevered on the mound for the Rams, scattering nine hits and giving up five walks. He fanned eight Indians during his 143-pitch outing. Ply, Cory Hargraves and Kagey each stroked a pair of hits for Montrose. Hayden Kunik and Chris Dewey recorded two hits apiece for the Tribe. Brent Devereaux took the loss on the mound.

"We felt that the semi-final was the championship game and I am so proud of this group," commented Ram mentor Shayne Mishler. "We had two hard luck years and this vindicated them as to the tlype of players they wanted to become. They will forever be on the wall of the gym as champions and a lot can be said for that."

The district title is the third in school history for the Montrose baseball program.
