MONTROSE - Continuing its mission to help make Montrose a great place to live and learn, the Jennings Memorial Foundation awarded close to $30,000 in grants to benefit the community and its residents, along with the 2007 Community Service Award, at its annual meeting and awards luncheon held this past Thursday in the Montrose Middle School cafeteria.

The recipient of the 2007 Community Service Award was the Montrose Depot Committee. The award includes a $1,000 grant towards continuous improvements to the depot.

The foundation board also approved a matching grant up to $10,000 for this project.

Members of the Depot Committee include Stephen Gold, Richard Aldrich, Sr., Smokey Landis, Bud Tackebury, Wayne White, and John Newconer.

Along with the annual Community Service Award, the foundation each year awards scholarships to Montrose graduating seniors. The scholarships are renewable for up to four years of college provided recipients maintain the required grade point average over the course of the school year.

This year eight graduating seniors were chosen to receive $2,000 scholarships each and five of last year's scholarship recipients received $2,000 renewals.

"I would like to thank each and every member of the Jennings Memorial Foundation Committee for their continued support of the Montrose Community Schools, our community, and our students," stated School Superintendent Mark Kleinhans as he addressed the gathering.

"The Jennings Foundation has been a key partner in the continuous improvement of our school system. They have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to help us improve the teaching and learning we provide our students."

During the program the foundation also recognized former Tri-County Citizen Publisher Dan Lea for his contributions and coverage over the years.

The Jennings Memorial Foundation was established in 1996 by Mr. And Mrs. Wyman Jennings who were life long benefactors in the Montrose Community. In its eleven years the foundation has given away over $2 million in grants. Twenty four percent of those grants have been awarded to the Montrose school system and its students.
