Habitat announces groundbreaking for first Chesaning home

Event set for Saturday, June 30


CHESANING - The groundbreaking ceremony for the first-ever Habitat for Humanity blitz build in Chesaning begins with a prayer and a song at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, at 900 E. Liberty Street. The event is open to the public.

"We hope everyone will come out and celebrate this exciting step in the Habitat home project," said Dianne Reeves, Chesaning project coordinator. "The community support has been amazing - from the churches and the construction professionals to the individuals willing to share their time and donations."

Saginaw Habitat for Humanity has joined with a group of Chesaning area churches, businesses and organizations for the local build. The Chesaning group has pledged a minimum $30,000 toward the cost of construction and recruits and schedules all the volunteers. Dozens of volunteers have already signed up for the build.

The wall-raising is scheduled for August 10. The new homebuyers, a couple and their five children ranging in age from 9 to 15, are already working on Habitat's "sweat-equity" requirements by assisting with construction at 1320 Cleveland St. in Saginaw.

Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing and homelessness. HFHI has dedicated over 200,000 houses worldwide in its 31-year history. Saginaw Habitat for Humanity as built or renovated 143 houses since its founding in 1987. Donations are tax-deductible.

Skilled volunteers as well as coordinators are still needed for this years blitz build.
