Last Monday, the Chesaning Board of Education recognized the achievement during its monthly worksession. Art instructor Mischelle Duranleau was on hand to share information about the art program and to present the MASB street sign proclaiming the school's achievement. Chesaning Union Schools Superintendent Kathy Stewart credited school staff for showing art students that their creative talents can make a difference in the community. "Our students participate in community service projects that help them look beyond their individual problems and use art to fulfill a community need. We're very proud of the work they're doing and the art they are producing. It's great to see these students use their amazing talents to do something positive for the community," she said. Each term, the students collaborate in choosing a new service project. The selection process is a critical piece of the program as students feel ownership in projects for which they have had the opportunity to contribute their ideas. Stewart said teachers report better attendance during the course of the art project, and the process provides an opportunity to gain real-world skills as graphic arts who must meet deadlines and produce quality work. Chesaning and other honored schools will now advance to a second round of judging for a chance to win a Michigan's Best cash awards donated by SEG School Insurance Specialists. These winners will be honored at MASB's Fall Conference, November 1-4 in Grand Rapids. |
