Fuel and family friendly fourth fun and fireworks



CORUNNA - Looking for some Fourth of July family fun close to home?

Area residents can enjoy plenty of family friendly fun, and a spectacular fireworks display, without breaking their bank to fund the fuel to get there by attending the Fourth of July Celebration at Corunna's Hugh McCurdy Park.

The event, scheduled for Wednesday, July 4 will feature a pancake breakfast, a car show, two parades, a bike decorating contest, children's games, a petting zoo, pony rides, a model car show, bingo, a craft show, a hockey exhibition, entertainment with juggler Tim Salisbury and lots of music including local boy band Westwind.

The ever-popular Belt Sander Races will once again be part of the event and the Historical Village will also be open for touring.

The day kicks off at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast which runs until 10:30 a.m.

A children's bike decorating contest will take place at 9 a.m. at the Shiawassee Street School followed by the Children's Bike Parade through downtown Corunna at 10:30 a.m.

The Firecracker Parade will follow, stepping off at 11 a.m. and making its way through downtown Corunna with Grand Marshals Bert and Bev Wieland riding at the helm.

A doubles horseshoe-pitching tournament begins at 10 a.m.

A model car show will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Cruise to the Park Car Show will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with music by Disc Jockey Doug Angell.

A craft show will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A model train display, ice skating in July, a hockey exhibition, miniature golf, the Historical Village, the petting zoo, and inflatable games all begin at noon and run until 6 p.m.

The Belt Sander Races begin at 1 p.m. with registration for the race taking place at noon.

Bingo, children's games, and a cakewalk all begin at 1 p.m.

From 2:30-3:30 p.m. a bubble gum blowing contest will be held, and a watermelon eating and seed-spitting contest will be held from 4-5 p.m.

Launch of the RE/MAX hot air balloon will take place from 6:30-7 p.m.

The Entertainment Tent will feature juggler Tim Salisbury from noon to 1 p.m. and again from 3-4 p.m.

Richard Paul will entertain in the tent from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Featured entertainment in the park's Center Pavilion includes one man band Craig Mardsen from 12-1:30 p.m., Aaron Noone from 1:45-3 p.m., The Lash from 3:30-5:30 p.m., Westwind from 6-8 p.m., and Mr. Moody from 8:30-10:30 p.m.

A spectacular celebration fireworks finale will take place at dusk.

McCurdy Park is located along the banks of the Shiawassee River on Corunna Avenue, just east of downtown Corunna.
