Montrose school district initiates civil suit against former payroll supervisor

MONTROSE - On June 21, 2007 the Montrose Community School District initiated a civil suit in the Genesee County Circuit Court against former payroll supervisor Dana Bacon and specific family members. The suit stems from Bacons alleged embezzlement of district payroll funds.

"Montrose Community Schools, with the assistance of its legal counsel Collins & Blaha, P.C., has initiated the process of recovering the funds it believes Ms. Bacon embezzled from the district," stated school Superintendent Mark Kleinhans. "The filing of this civil suit is one of the many avenues the district is pursuing in order to make the school district whole."

And while the district and its attorneys pursue reconciliation in the case, the schools insurance provider will pay the district $200,000 for its claim.

The district and its current property/casualty insurance provider, the School Employers Trust and School Employers Group (SET SEG), finalized the claim of loss in the amount of $200,000, which stemmed from the alleged embezzlement.

Kleinhans noted he is extremely satisfied with the insurance provider's investigation and processing of the school's claim.

"From the point and time that the school district notified our insurer of the loss of funds, SET SEG representatives were diligent in collaborating with district attorneys Collins & Blaha, P.C. in identifying the amount of funds embezzled and the respective insurance limitations of our policy," he stated.

"I am very pleased that SET SEG was so expeditious in processing our claim of loss for $200,000 which was the amount appropriated under our policy."
