Record-setting Lady Bulldogs gather numerous softball awards



St. Charles' record-setting season did not go un-noticed as several members of the 30-win softball squad garnered post-season honors.

Todd Halcomb's 'Dawgs won a school-record 30 games in 2007, collecting 20 more wins than they had in 2006, to post the biggest turn-around of any school in the state. They won 16 straight games during the course of their 30-11 season, which was also a school record. Their 9-5 record in the tough TVC was the school's best mark in over 20 years.

Sammi Mason received Special Mention All-State and Sara Mead earned Honorable Mention recognition at the state level. Several St. Charles players garnered district, regional and league accolades.

Mason, Mead and Rachel Lichon each were named to the All-District and All-Region squads, with Mason and Mead going on to earn their additional state honors. Meanwhile, Coach Halcomb was named District and Regional Coach of the Year and received All-State Coach of the Year Special Mention.

Mason spearheaded the record-setting season for St. Charles with remarkable production at the plate and on the mound. The senior hurler limited opposing hitters to a paltry .105 batting average while posting a miniscule 0.62 ERA over 164 innings of work. She struck out 275 batters while walking 47 and finished with a 19-6 record. Meanwhile, Mason posed a threat of her own at the plate, where she batted a hefty .408 with 19 extra base hits, including four home runs.

Mead, served as the team's number two pitcher where she won 11 games and lost just five, with a 1.13 ERA. But Mead won her post-season honors for her work at the plate and in the outfield. The hard-hitting junior, who hit a team-high .462, was also a terror on the basepaths, where she stole 27 bases in 28 attempts.

Junior second baseman Rachel Lichon was named to the district and regional teams based on her solid hitting and glove work along with her base-stealing prowess. Lichon nothced 11 extra base hits among her 53 hits, logging an impressive .411 batting average. She stole 26 bases and fielding at an .891 clip for the season.

Mason (First Team), Mead (Second Team) and Lichon (Honorable Mention) were all named to the Saginaw News All-Area C-D team while Coach Halcomb was accorded 2007 Coach of the Year honors by the Saginaw News for C-D Division schools.

In TVC-West voting, Mason and Mead landed First Team spots while Lichon was named to the Second Team. Catcher Felicia Reinke, utility player Lexy Burch and outfielder Toni Madden each received Honorable Mention in voting by league coaches. Halcomb was voted as conference Coach of the Year.
