Library Friends show flower power

CHESANING - The view from the Chesaning Public Library's brand new sidewalk got a little brighter this month, as the Chesaning Area Friends of the Library completed a landscaping project funded by the Friends group and several generous donations.

Designed by Friends member Ginny Alden-Angst, the garden area spans the east side of the building where a much-needed sidewalk was constructed last month. An elevated garden on the rock retaining wall now features a variety of annual and perennial plants, including forsythia, day lilies, marigolds, petunias, weigela, hostas, carpet roses and ornamental grasses. The volunteers also added mulch and created a decorative stone path near the front of the building.

Several family members joined the Friends group during their marathon workdays on June 27 and 28, and other passersby stopped to offer encouragement, said Friends President Meredith Adelman. One supporter purchased pizza for the group, and another stopped by with bottled water.

"One couple was just driving by and stopped to write a check because they were so appreciative of what we were doing," she said. "We heard a lot of nice comments as we were working."

Many area businesses donated items for the project, or offered discounts on purchases, including Self-Serve Lumber, M-57 Surplus, Ace Hardware, Riverside Flowers, Hedrich Excavating and Beardslees' Tree Farm and Nursery.

Anthony Searles, Brittany and Jonathan Boyd, Meredith, George, Emma and Pete Adelman, Ginny Alden-Angst, Tracey Darling, Mechelle, Seneca and Ollie Kuchar and Lynne Glover worked on the project, with support from Jeff Roy, Joe and Deanna Sedlar, Marilyn Devereaux and Joe Greenfelder.

The Chesaning Area Friends of the Library supports the efforts of the Chesaning Public Library through fundraisers and special programs aimed at enhancing the library experience for patrons of all ages.

The library is located at 227 E. Broad St., Chesaning. Summer hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays.
