Organizers say the event will appeal to both wine connoisseurs and novices. A trained sommelier - a person with extensive knowledge about wines and how to serve them - will discuss basic wine varieties, how to differentiate and describe common flavors, and the rules of thumb for matching wine with food. "You know how you hear phrases like 'oakey' or 'buttery?' We're going to learn what that means and how to identify those tastes in several different wines," explained Chesaning Library Director Erin Schmandt. "We're going to learn how to buy our next bottle of wine with confidence." Guests don't need to know a Cabernet from a Chardonnay to attend. "This is for people who love wine and those who wish they knew more about wine," Schmandt added. Information sheets and other resources will be distributed so participants can use their newfound wine knowledge at home. The library boosters planned the event with a dual purpose. Beyond its value as a small fundraiser, they hope it will give area residents an opportunity for fellowship and enrichment. "During the library needs study conducted earlier this year, we discussed the lack of organized social events and programs for adults," said Meredith Adelman, Friends of the Library President. "We thought this would be a fun way to bring people together and learn something in the process." Wine and light refreshments will be served, and drawings for door prizes will be held. The event is open to adults 21 years or older. Entertainment will be provided by popular local musicians Craig and Gene Lawson. The Lawsons play guitar, harmonica and mandolin, and their melodies will provide background music as event-goers learn about wine through tasting and discussion. Tickets are $25 per person or $40 per couple. They are now on sale at the library or through any Chesaning Area Friends of the Library member. Main Beverage, CenturyTel, Renewable Energy Systems, Broad Street Pharmacy and Heritage Tire are sponsoring the event, and additional business sponsors are needed. Call Schmandt at the library, (989) 845-3211, for sponsorship information. |
