Community State Bank announces quarterly community care fund recipients

Community State Bank is giving money away to local organizations through its Community Care Fund. This fund was set up in 1994 after an employee suggested collecting donations from co-workers in exchange for a designated "Dress Down Day." To date, over $80,000 has been donated from the Community Care Fund to nearly 100 organizations.

The recipients for this quarter include:

  • Project Linus, which received $400. Project Linus, established in 1995, is a 100% non-profit organization, and has 398 coordinators nationwide. The program provides hand made blankets in order to provide love, security, warmth and comfort to seriously ill or traumatized children and other children in crisis. The funds will be used for supplies, printing and postage to run this program.
  • Bulldog Pride Committee, which received $387.65. They will use the funds to purchase balloons, paint, wood, and signs to decorate the town and the football field for St. Charles 2007 Homecoming.
  • The Bill Agresta Scholarship Hustle, which received $223.95. The grant will be used to help support the Peggy Munger Scholarship Fund, which provides college scholarships to Hemlock High School students. The Peggy Munger Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 to honor a former Hemlock English teacher. Bill Agresta has been collecting and returning bottles and cans and selling candy for many years to raise money. Students, staff and the community have come together to support Mr. Agresta and his fundraising efforts. The fund awards as many $750 scholarships as possible each year.
  • Underground Railroad, which received $245.19. The grant will be used for the functioning of their emergency shelter. The emergency shelter is available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. The Underground Railroad provides over 9,000 bed nights of shelter for women and their children annually. They have been in operation since 1977 and serve all residents of Saginaw County.
  • Birch Run Beautification Committee, which received $175.14. They will use the grant to purchase landscaping supplies, plants and landscape materials for the annual planting of the Village Main Street business district. The committee consists of approximately 6 members who are volunteer township and village residents who plant and care for the business district plantings.

All contributions came from employees, directors and the bank itself. "These organizations are important to our employees and our community," President Robert Wolak said. "We pride ourselves on giving back to the community."

Community State Bank is one of the few locally owned and operated banks in the area, with locations in St. Charles, Chesaning, Thomas Township and Birch Run.
