Local News PUBLISHED:
Former Oakley Village Councilman Richard L. Fish filed the petitions against Gasper and Wenzlick. Those petitions stem from the cancellation of the police contract with the village stating that Gasper and Wenzlick "Willfully and with malice voted to break the police contract with the Village of Oakley at the May 11, 2007 special township board meeting." The petition to recall Peterson was filed by township resident Raymond Radosa. That petition states that Peterson "Voted to pay the Green Creek Drain bill without reading the written opinion of the Brady Township attorney at the May 3, 2006 board meeting." In order to file the petitions with the County Clerk's office, petitioners had to gather at least 245 signatures, an amount equal to twenty-five percent of the number of Brady Township votes cast for the office of governor in the November 2006 General Election. The petition to recall Gasper garnered 269 signatures, while 258 signatures supported the petition against Wenzlick, and the petition against Peterson received the support of 268 residents. In order to be deemed valid and be put on the ballot, the County Clerk's office must first check that the top portion of each petition is filled out properly, that the circular's (person circulating the petition) portion is filled out properly, and that he/she is a registered voter. At that point, the township clerk would then check that each signature is that of a registered voter of the township with a valid address. However, County Clerk Susan Kaltenbach noted that because the township clerk is involved in the recall, her office must assume that responsibility in place of the township office. "Because the township clerk is involved in the recall the County Clerk's office must check all signatures on the petition for validity," Kaltenbach stated. Provided the required number of signatures remain for each petition after the checks, each issue will be placed on the ballot. |
