New Lothrop tops in the county, state on MME

Board approves Latchkey program for 2007-08 school year


NEW LOTHROP - Students in the New Lothrop School District posted the highest overall scores in Shiawassee County for most categories tested on the Michigan Merit Exam. New Lothrop scores were also among the top ten percent in the state, topping state averages by a large margin.

Board of Education members were presented with the district's results at Monday night's regular meeting.

New Lothrop posted math scores of 72.3 percent compared to the state average of 46.5 percent. Reading scores were 72.3 percent for New Lothrop students compared to a 59.7 percent state average. Science scores for New Lothrop were 76.6 percent compared to the state average of 55.9 percent. Social Studies scores came in at 91.7 percent compared to the state average of 83.3. And Writing scores were 61.7 percent for New Lothrop students compared to the state average of 40.1 percent.

"Needless to say we are very pleased with our scores. It speaks well for our students, our parents, and our community that our students do this well," noted Superintendent John Strycker.

"Hats off to our staff as well for the daily investment they put into our children in the classroom. This is just one positive result of their efforts."

In action items the board approved the addition of a Latchkey program for before and after school to the district's offerings.

The program will begin at 6:30 a.m. each day.

The board also approved personnel for the program. Ann Stankiewicz was hired as the Latchkey Supervisor. Karen McGuire and Theresa Dolan were hired to serve as Latchkey assistants.

In other action the board approved hiring Cheryl Eisenhauer as a full time bus driver.

"It's been a busy month for us regarding hiring of staff," noted Strycker. "I've been very impressed with our candidates for all positions and look forward to having these new hires join our school family."

A breakfast program for all K-12 district students was also approved. The program will be available to Latchkey students.
