Rams be-Deviled in GAC Red opener

Lake Fenton dominates in 24-16 win

MONTROSE -- The warm glow from last Saturday's victory at Cros-Lex faded fast Friday night as the Montrose varsity gridders opened their Genesee Area Conference Red Division season with visiting Lake Fenton. The Blue Devils looked poised for another scorching hot season, sidelining the Rams 24-16. "They dominated the clock in the second half," admitted Montrose head coach Dennis Reinhart. "We couldn't get our defense off the field. We'd get them into third-and-long, or fourth-and-long, and they'd convert. It seemed like when they needed to make a play, they could, and when we needed to make a play, we couldn't." The Rams actually opened the scoring, on a two yard run by Cody Groulx with 18 ticks left in the first quarter. Groulx also ran in the two-point play for an 8-0 lead. The Blue Devils stormed back, scoring on a 10 yard run with 9:05 left in the second. The conversion play was also a run. Lake Fenton got the go-ahead score on the last play of the half, a five yard halfback pass with no time on the clock. The conversion was also a pass, making it 16-8 at the intermission. With 17 seconds left in the third, the Devils added the much-needed insurance score, a two yard touchdown run. They also ran in the conversion for a 24-8 lead. Montrose closed out the scoring on a four yard run by Groulx with 10:04 left to play. Quarterback Seth Hursh connected with James Person on the two point conversion pass. The Rams finished the night rushing for 111 yards, and throwing for another 86, making a combined 197 yards of total offense. They mustered 12 first downs. Groulx was the leading groundgainer, picking up 66 yards in 15 carries. Hursh went 6 of 13 passing for 86 yards. Person snagged two receptions for 33 yards. The Blue Devils amassed 217 yards on the ground and 103 through the air for 320 yards of total offense. They picked up 17 first downs. Their lost fumble was the lone turnover of the game. For the Montrose defense, Derek Elston led with 14 tackles. Zach Kuzniar hauled down 12 tackles. "I got out-coached tonight," Reinhart said. "We knew what was coming, but on too many plays we didn't have the guys in the right position to make the plays. It's our job to get them ready during the week, and that's something we're going to have to work on." Things don't get easier for the Rams this week, with Whittemore-Prescott coming to town on Friday night. The Cardinals are 2-0 on the season.
