Montrose's Beck takes top honors at Showboat Park X-C meet

CHESANING Ken Beck turned in the fastest time in the Division 3-4 category of the Chesaning Cross-Country Invitational, helping Montrose to a 6th place finish last Thursday. Beck's efforts highlighted a 19-team event that included a rare occasion where all four schools in the Tri-County Citizen coverage area competed in the same event, which was run at Showboat Park. Beck's time of 16:50 topped all runners in the small-school division as Montrose finished sixth with 176 team points. Chesaning's Andrew Guzdial finished fourth with a clocking of 17:21 and teammate Trevor Denton was 11th with a time of 17:57 as the Indians placed 10th among the boys teams. David Leos was 24th for Montrose, covering the course in 19:01 Ram teammate Travis Tekiele was 33rd at 19:30. Jesse Lorencz (19:39) was the top runner for New Lothrop at 36th place, helping the Hornets to a 12th place finish. Mark Chad led all St. Charles runners with a time of 20:10, good for 52nd spot as the Bulldogs finished in 17th place in boys competition. Other guys runners who earned points for their respective teams were Montrose's Jesse Beardslee (53rd, 20:11) and Taylor Kirk (92nd, 20:51), Chesaning's Brandon Bishop (37th, 19:40) and Terry Bishop (103rd, 25:40), New Lothrop's Dakota Allen (40th, 19:50), Brandon Praski (74th, 21:25), Josh Schiefer (84th, 22:27) and Pat Schnell (88th, 22:30), and St. Charles' Zach Murray (87th, 22:28) and Tyler Wilson (90th, 22:37). The boys' competition was won by Swan Valley. In girls' competition, New Lothrop finished the highest among the four area schools with a seventh place finish among the 19 entries. Chesaning placed 10th, followed by St. Charles at 17th and Montrose at 18th. New Lothrop's five top runners were Emily Vincke (15th, 22:42), Kayla Knieper (29th, 24:10), Ashley Root (31st, 24:11), Brittney Henige (49th,

25:36) and Chelsea Parsons (80th, 28:34).

Chesaning was paced by Chantelle Fondren (19th, 22:50), followed by Heather Sawvel (32nd, 24:13), Lindsey Halvorsen (74th, 27:51), Kaylee Turnwald (75th, 27:52) and Carlie Zervan (76th, 27:53). Olivia Sieggreen was the top female runner for St. Charles, finishing 67th with a time of 27:00 while Adrieanna Hosea led the way for the Montrose girls with a time of 35:48, good for 42nd place. Perry was the overall team winner for the Div. 3-4 portion of the girls' race.

Hornet gridders muzzle Bulldogs, 50-15

NEW LOTHROP For the second week in a row, New Lothrop's varsity football team played a game under the running-clock rule for most of the second half, as the Hornets made quick work of visiting Bentley last Friday, 50-15. It didn't take Jake Emmendorfer's squad long to assert itself as the Hornets scored just one minute into the contest on a 14-yard Kyle Trent touchdown run. Trent's dash to pay dirt followed runs of 40 and 21 yards by QB Ryan Praski as New Lothrop covered 75 yards in just three plays from scrimmage on the opening drive. Anthony Griffin tacked on the extra point and the Hornets were off and running, 7-0. On its next possession, New Lothrop marched 80 yards on 10 plays, capped by Praski's 10-yard jaunt into the end zone. The missed PAT left the Hornets with a 13-0 advantage heading into the second quarter. The Hornets, who amassed a whopping 458 yards of total offense while shackling the Bulldogs to just 140 yards of overall offense, yielded a touchdown to Bentley at 11:38 of the second quarter before running off four straight touchdowns before intermission to take an insurmountable lead of 41-7. Praski fired scoring strikes to Kyle Moore (31 yards) and Brian Sheridan (63 yards) and Tom Wenzlick scored on runs of 19 and 7 yards during the offensive assault. Wenzlick also ran in a pair of two-point conversions during the decisive stretch. The only scoring of the third quarter came courtesy of a blocked punt by Marc Confer, who knocked the ball out of the back of the end zone for a safety to stretch the lead to 43-7 at 6:58 of the period. Under the running clock, Jeremy Emmendorfer scored on a three-yard run, punctuated by a Griffin PAT before Bentley narrowed the final deficit to 50-15 with a score late in the game. The Hornets gained 15 first downs to just six for Bentley. Wenzlick rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries to pace the Hornet ground attack while Praski ran 11 times for 131 yards and a TD in addition to passing for 100 yards and another two scores. Sheridan hauled in a pair of passes from Praski, good for 69 yards and a score while Moore caught the 31-yard scoring strike. Confer was dominant on defense, recording 11 tackles, a safety and a sack. Moore had eight tackles, Allen Krupp added five stops and a fumble recovery and Jason Henige came up with an interception for the Hornets. The win gives New Lothrop a 2-1 record in the GAC-Blue and a 2-2 mark, overall.

Ram kickers complete busy week

Montrose's varsity soccer team picked up its first win of the season at the tail end of a busy series of contests when it whitewashed visiting Michigan School for the Deaf last Wednesday. Junior Kyle Colby scored a hat trick and assisted on an additional goal to pace the Rams to a convincing 8-0 triumph over MSD. Brad Smith chipped in with a pair of scores while Logan Dowell and Jake Edwards scored their first goals of the season. Freshman Tyler Warren also scored for the Rams, who sped to a comfortable 4-0 cushion at intermission. The MSD win helped ease the sting of three losses suffered by Chet Ptasnik's squad on Saturday, September 8 at the tough Columbia Central tournament and a tight 2-1 setback to GAC foe LakeVille last Tuesday. On Saturday, the Rams ran into three formidable opponents, losing to Lakeview, 8-0, to Woodhaven, 5-0, and to host Columbia Central, 3-0. Corky Hickmott was named to the All-tournament team at the end of the day for his efforts between the pipes. The talented senior keeper turned away 42 shots on the day to earn a spot on the 11-man tournament team. Wednesday's league contest against visiting LakeVille provided the most drama for Montrose during the week's action as the Rams fell to the Falcons, 2-1. Brad Smith scored early in the second half to tie the score at 1-1 after LakeVille's Joe Manor gave the Falcons a quick lead just four minutes into the contest. Smith was assisted on his goal by Kyle Colby. Matt Mead kicked in the winner with just 16 minutes to go in the game. "Our defense was better against LV and I think we are moving in the right direction," commented Ptasnik after the tight contest. "I think it was a competitive, fairly well-played game." Falcon Coach Jim Mead concurred. "It was a great day of soccer and I thought both teams moved the ball well. We played good defense and we consistently made good, short passes," concluded Mead. The Falcons picked up their first win in three league contests and improved to 2-4-1 overall while the Rams now stand at 1-6-2 overall and 0-3 in the GAC.

Chesaning spikers sizzle at Carrollton

SAGINAW Chesaning's varsity volleyball team fired on all cylinders last Monday, pounding the host Cavaliers into submission in three straight sets, 25-11, 25=10, 25-20. Brooke Jastrzembowski was good on 13 serves with 3 aces, had 10 attacks with 3 ills, recorded 5 assists and a solo block to pace the Indians to victory. Katie Vincke was steady all night with 12 serves, 21 sets, 3 attacks and 3 kills. Other steady contributions came from Amanda Mort (5 serves with an ace, 8 attacks, 5 kills and 27 sets), Megan Buck (6 serves, 4 aces, 3 attacks, 2 kills, 3 assists), Brooke Beckman (2 serves, 4 attacks, five kills, 2 assists), Megan Newton (6 serves, 2 aces, 7 attacks, 1 kill, 1 assist) and Sydney Pacek (6 serves, 2 aces, 5 attacks, 1 kill, 5 assists). "It was a good night for all the girls," praised Chesaning coach Pam Wesley. "The teamwork from each girl really clinched the night."

Tribe soccer squad loses twice

Chesaning's varsity soccer team lost a air of close contests last week, losing at Ithaca on Monday, 5-2, and falling at home to Ovid-Elsie, 3-0. The Indians took a quick lead at Ithaca when J.J. Tatroe scored on an assist from Brandon Aldridge just eight minutes into the contest. Ithaca responded with a goal at the 28-minute mark to knot the score at 1-1 heading into intermission. The host Yellowjackets poured in three straight goals within the first 10 minutes of the second half to take a 4-1 stranglehold before Tatroe scored again on another assist from Aldridge 13 minutes into the second stanza. Ithaca added a late goal to provide the final margin of victory. Kyle Hoover had six saves in net for Chesaning. The Indians put a dozen shots on the net against visiting O-E two days later, but couldn't find the back of the net en route to a 3-0 loss to the Marauders. Ovid-Elsie led, 2-0, at halftime. Hoover had 15 saves on the night.

Hornet spikers split pair of GAC contests

MT. MORRIS New Lothrop's varsity volleyball team defeated Montrose, but lost to host Mt. Morris in a volleyball quad last Thursday. The contests marked the first league action for Sheri Warner's Hornets, as NL turned away Montrose by a 25-15, 25-16, 25-20 count, but lost to the Panthers, 10-25, 15-25, 12-25. "We got off to a good start in our first match of the night against Montrose, playing aggressive and confident volleyball," assessed Warner. "I don't feel we played with that same confidence and poise against Mt. Morris. Some of that is credited to them, as they serve well, which affects your serve receive and the running of your offense." Sabrina Besaw was solid throughout the evening, coming up with 39 assists, 10 digs, 3 aces and a pair of kills during the two matches. Kayla Krupp recorded 13 kills, 10 digs and was 22 of 24 passing on the night. Other top performers for the Hornets were Rachelle Kviz (12 kills, 7 digs, 2 aces, 5 of 6 passing), Monica Confer (12 kills, 6 digs, 4 aces, 17 of 19 passing) and Kelsey Gasper (11 kills, 10 digs, 9 aces, 18 of 19 passing). Gracie Theodore and Shauna Henige excelled on defense, with Theodore clicking on 8 of 9 passes and 5 digs while Henige was good on 9 of 11 passing with 5 digs. The split gives the Hornets a 1-1 record in the GAC and an overall mark of 8-9.

Montrose's Beck wins Genesee X-C Invite

GENESEE Ken Beck won top honors at the Genesee Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, September 8 to help Montrose to a 4th place finish among six Division I teams. Beck crossed the finish line in 17:36, best among more than 60 runners. David Leos placed 17th with a clocking of 19:27 while Travis Tekiele followed on his heels just seven seconds later, good for 20th spot. Jesse Beardslee's time of 20:24 was next best for the Rams and earned 31st place while Taylor Kirk completed the scoring for Montrose with a 22:19 time, good enough for 51st place in the tough competition that was won by Davison. Montrose's girls team did not have enough runners to qualify in the team category, but Adrieanna Hosea led three Ram runners with a time of 26:30. Ashley Fikes clocked in at 32:24, her best time of the year, and Kristi Burner finished in 36:19.

Montrose drops volleyball tilt to NL, bounces back to edge Byron

MT. MORRIS Montrose's varsity volleyball team lost to New Lothrop before bouncing back to nose out Byron at a quad held at Mt. Morris last Thursday. Lisa Conrad's Rams fell in three straight sets against New Lothrop, 15-25, 16-25, 20-25, but responded by taking a five-game cliffhanger from Byron, 29-27, 20-25, 25-15, 22-25, 18-16. "We started off slow against New Lothrop and could not slow their serving down as they outplayed us," commented Conrad. "We came alive against Byron, however, and fought for a hard-earned victory." Kyrie Diem led the Rams at the net, going 66-for-71 on attacks with 19 kills. Diem also clicked on 34 of 38 serves with 4 aces and had 6 blocks. Ashley Gifford was accurate on 32 of 34 serves with 5 aces and came u with 22 digs. Other top contributors for Montrose were Kirsti Groulx (15 of 15 serving, 70 of 74 assist attempts, 32 assists) and Sara Pully (22 kills and 6 blocks). The split gives Montrose a 1-1 record in the GAC and an overall ledger of 11-4-1.
