Bulldogs alone at the top

St. Charles gridders muzzle Huskies, 46-20

ST. CHARLES -- As the varsity football teams reach the mid-point of the regular season, area league standings are starting to shake themselves out. And in the Tri-Valley Conference West Division, the St. Charles Bulldogs find themselves alone at the top after a convincing 46-20 win over Breckenridge Friday night. The Bulldogs improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season, 4-0 in TVC West play, with the victory. They've already dispatched their leading contender Ithaca, at 3-1. If the 'Dawgs continue to take care of business, they should find themselves firmly entrenched in that top position. The Bulldogs set the tone early Friday night, running up 39 points before the Huskies could get on the board. The first St. Charles touchdown came at 5:57 of the first quarter on an eight yard run by Ryan Humpert. For the two-point conversion, quarterback Brian Halas connected with Marshall Davenport on a pass. On that drive, a long touchdown run by Halas was called back with a holding penalty. Breckenridge then took the ball and drove to the St. Charles 10 before coming away without any points. The Bulldogs took the ball back and went the length of the field, scoring at 10:41 of the second on a 27 yard run by M. Davenport. Halas connected with Travis Crane on the conversion pass. "That was key," said St. Charles coach Bob Welzein. "That really set the tone for the game." On their next possession, Jacob Green scored for the 'Dawgs on a 32 yard break-away run. Halas ran in the conversion to make it 24-0 with 9:30 left to play in the half. Then at the 6:56 mark of the second, M. Davenport scampered in from 13 yards out. Dugan Roosa ran in the conversion for the 32-0 lead. Roosa got a touchdown of his own at 3:23 of the second on a six yard run. This time Crane kicked the extra point to put the 'Dawgs comfortably up 39-0. Breckenridge got on the board with 10 seconds left in the half on a one yard run by Cane Larkins. The two-point pass attempt failed. In the third quarter, Jake Nagel scored for Bulldogs at 8:50 on a seven yard run. Crane's PAT made it 46-6. The Huskies scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter against the Bulldog reserves. With 6:29 left to play, Cory Neal hit Nathan Gulick on a 44 yard TD pass play. The duo also connected on the conversion attempt. At the 3:57 mark of the fourth, Larkins got his second touchdown on a two yard run. The two-point try failed. The Bulldogs finished the night with 236 yards rushing and 56 yards passing for 282 yards of total offense. The Huskies picked up 99 yards rushing and 172 yards on 10 of 26 passing for 271 yards. But roughly 130 of those total yards came in the second half. Humpert led the 'Dawged defense with eight tackles. Brad Saunders had six tackles. Roosa had four tackles with two batted passes and an interception. Ryan Katch also had four tackles with two batted passes. "This was a good win for us, but we can't let our guard down," Welzein assessed. "We have Seminary this week and I believe they will be the best team we've faced. They were 1-3 going into tonight, but they could have been 4-0. They've been close in every game." The Bulldogs will face the Cardinals on the road Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
