Hornet spikers win three of four against GAC-Red opponents New Lothrop's varsity volleyball team completed the cross-over portion of its league schedule last week, defeating Lake Fenton and host Durand on Monday before beating Goodrich and losing to LakeVille at home on Wednesday. At Durand, the Hornets swept past Lake Fenton, 25-21, 25-9 and 25-19 before hooking up with the host Railroaders in a highly-contested rematch between the two teams from the previous Saturday's Birch Run Tournament. This time, NL prevailed, avenging a loss in Saturday's semi-finals to Durand, by pounding out a 25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 25-17 over the Railroaders. "These were two big wins for us tonight," commented NL coach Sheri Warner. "I thought we did a very good job of turning things around in the match against Durand. The key differences were that our ball control was better and we were more consistent and aggressive from the serving line." Rachelle Kviz amassed 23 kills, a dozen digs and 7 aces on the night, while Monica Confer accumulated 19 kills, 16 digs and an ace. Other key contributors for the Hornets were Kayla Krupp (13 kills, 27 digs), Sabrina Besaw (59 assists, 11 digs, 6 aces, 3 kills), Kelsey Gasper (17 digs, 8 kills, 7 aces), Hannah Wenzlick (4 kills and a block), defensive specialist Gracie Theodore (8 acs, 5 digs) and libero Shauna Henige (11 digs). Two days later, the Hornets hosted Goodrich and LakeVille, two more GAC-Red rivals. New Lothrop disposed of Goodrich, 25-21, 25-19, 26-28, 25-21 before falling to the Falcons, 16-25, 25-18, 20-25, 24-26. On the night, Confer registered 30 kills, 15 digs, 6 blocks and 5 aces. Kviz chipped in with 20 kills, 9 digs, 4 aces and a pair of blocks. Besaw had a whopping 74 assists to go with 10 digs and 9 aces while Krupp had 31 digs, 13 kills, 5 aces and 3 blocks. Gasper was solid with 14 kills, 19 digs and 5 aces. The Hornets will now shoot for the GAC-Blue Division crown, having completed the GAC-Red portion of their schedule. New Lothrop now stands at 4-2 in the GAC and at 15-11, overall.
Indian spikers complete busy week Chesaning's varsity volleyball team picked up some valuable experience during one of its busiest stretches as the Indians played in the tough Birch Run tournament on September 15, participated in a quad meet at John Glenn last Monday and followed with a match at Swan Valley on Wednesday. Chesaning opened the Birch Run Invitational with a match in pool play against the host Panthers, losing the contest, 25-12, 25-13. The Indians followed with pool losses against Davison, 25-17, 11-25, 10-15, and Clio, 23-25, 13-25. Chesaning finished seventh overall, losing in the elimination round to Davison by a 16-25, 20-25 count. On Monday, the Tribe traveled to Bay City for a quad meet. Chesaning dropped straight two-game sets to Nouvel and host John Glenn before finally dropping a three-game nail biter to Corunna, 25-22, 19-25, 15-12. Brooke Jastrzembowski registered 28 attacks, 10 kills, 18 assist sets, 3 blocks, 24 serves with 4 acs and 8 digs during the evening. Katie Vincke was also solid with 11 attacks, 3 kills, 67 sets, a block assist, 18 serves and a pair of aces, and 3 digs. Other key contributors for the Tribe were Amanda Mort (17 attacks, 3 kills, 67 sets, a block assist, 19 serves with 6 aces, 3 digs), Megan Buck (17 attacks, 9 kills, 10 assists, a block and a block assist, 11 serves with 5 aces, ), Chelsea Harris (21 serve receives, 7 digs), Megan Newton (17 attacks, 5 kills, 7 set assists, 4 blocks, 2 digs) and Sydney Pacek (14 attacks, 2 kills, 10 set assists, a block assist, 13 serves and 23 serve receives). The Indians fell at Swan Valley two days later, 23-25, 23-25 despite Megan Newton's 5 serves, 9 serve receives, 3 digs, 11 attacks with a kill, 3 solo blocks and 3 assist blocks and 4 set assists. Jastrzembowski drove home a pair of aces among her eight good serves. She also had three kills among seven attacks, 14 set assists and three digs. Mort tallied 28 sets, 8 serves, 3 digs and an ace while Buck added two kills among seven attacks, 10 serves and an ace, and three set assists. Brooke Beckman contributed eight serves with an ace, three attacks and four kills, a pair of set assists and two blocks to the Tribe cause.
Chesaning drops three soccer tilts Chesaning's varsity soccer team lost three straight contests last week, losing at Freeland on Monday before dropping home contests to Bullock Creek and Durand on Wednesday and Thursday. On Monday, the Tribe fell behind 4-0 at halftime before finally losing 7-0 to the host Falcons. Kyle Hoover had 16 saves in for the Indians as Freeland held a 23-8 advantage in shots on goal. Visiting Bullock Creek shut out the Indians on Wednesday, 4-0, peppering the net with 24 shots on goal. Chesaning trailed 2-0 at intermission of that contest. Durand came to town on the following day and raced to a 5-0 halftime advantage en route to a7-2 win. Hoover had 21 saves between the pipes while J.J. Tatroe and Brandon Aldridge each had second half goals for the Indians.
Tribe gals finish 12th among 14 schools at 'Muth X-C Invite FRANKENMUTH Chesaning's cross country team placed 12th among 14 schools last Thursday at the Frankenmuth Invitational in the female segment of the race while Chesaning's guys only fielded four runners at the meet. Despite falling one runner short of qualifying for the guys' competition, Andrew Guzdial shined for the Tribe by finishing fifth among all runners with a time of 17:37. Trevor Denton placed 11th with a clocking of 18:04, while Brandon Bishop was 50th at 20:16 and Terry Bishop came in 108th with a time of 25:46. Chantelle Fondren paced the Indian gals with a time of 25:38, good for 57th place. Lyndsey Halvorsen (68th, 26:41), Carlie Zervan (78th, 28:28), Kaylee Turnwald (79th, 28:31) and Melissa Martinez (83rd, 29:19) each earned points for their team. In the Middle School portion of the contest, Jessica Sawvel finished fourth among the girls with a time of 24:41 while Rob Kovach (20:17) and John Forsyth (20:37) finished fifth and sixth, respectively for the boys.
Montrose harriers race past MM, LV MT. MORRIS Montrose captured four of the top five spots in the boys division of a double dual GAC cross country meet last Tuesday, sweeping past host Mt. Morris, 26-32, and LakeVille, 17-41. Ken Beck topped all runners with a time of 18:37 to grab top honors. Mt. Morris' Joe Sedlak finished second in 19:20, but three straight Ram harriers followed to secure the victory for Montrose. David Leos was third at 19:29, Jesse Beardslee came in fourth with a season-best time of19:36 and Travis Tekiele placed fifth with a clocking of 19:57. Steve Yerian completed the scoring for Montrose with a time of 24:00, good for 17th place, overall. Montrose's girls team did not field enough runners to compete in its portion of the event, but Adrianna Hosea took fourth place with a time of 25:12 for the Rams.
NL competes at Holly X-C invite HOLLY New Lothrop's boys and girls cross country teams each finished 16th among 30 schools on Saturday, September 15 at the 40th Annual Holly Cross Country Invitational. For New Lothrop's girls, Emily Vincke medalled, running a personal best time of 21:34. Other top runners for the Hornets were Kayla Knieper (23:43), Ashley Root (24:05), Brittney henige (24:15), Amanda Sanders (24:45), Celeste Rousseau (26:37) and Jessica Parsons (33:03). Jesse Lorencz led the NL boys with a clocking of 19:10, followed by Dakota Allen (19:46), Brandon Praski (20:10), Pat Schnell (20:22), Josh Schiefer (21:27), Tiler Bacon (23:35) and Matt Knieper (28:07). Running in the JV race were Cody Jacobs (24:05), Chelsea Parsons (27:19), Kristen Baryo (30:42), Carla Pani (31:48), Eric Crenshaw (35:11), Tricia Stankiewicz (35:17) and Neha Gurgar (36:46). In the Junior High race, Sal Adams ran the two miles in 13:13, followed by Rachel Vincke (13:38), Mitch Sovis (13:39), Steven Chappelle (14:29), Kelsey Bacon (14:46), Kayla Bila (14:51), Keith Schnell (15:05), Josh Stankiewicz (15:18), Gavin Bennett (15:22), Eric Milks (15:35), Courtney Seamon (15:44), Adam Ashley (16:01), Cory Harris (17:52), Kylie Jacobs (18:29), Corina Bitterman (18:31), Olivia Moody (18:32), Julia Johnson (18:40), Natalie Henige (21:13), Alex Crammer (21:20), Caitlin Clason (21:41) and Courtney Bila (23:26).
Hornets play host to first GAC cross country meet of the season NEW LOTHROP New Lothrop's cross country team entertained GAC rivals Durand and Genesee in the first league meet of the season last Tuesday, winning the girls' portion of the race by default and finishing behind Durand in the boys' segment of the competition. In the guys' race, Genesee did not have a complete team, but Durand was able to post an 18-43 win over New Lothrop. Jesse Lorencz turned in the fastest time for the Hornets, finishing in a time of 19:25. Dakota Allen was seventh overall with a clocking of 19:44, followed by Pat Schnell (11th at 21:34), Brandon Praski (13th at 21:43) and Josh Schiefer (15th at 22:26). Also running for the NL boys were Tiler Bacon (23:03), Cody Jacobs (24:55), Matt Knieper (25:00) and Eric Crenshaw (32:05). New Lothrop's girls won their race when Durand and Genesee were unable to field a full team of five runners. Emily Vincke won the girls' race, crossing the finish line in 21:45. Amanda Sanders was fourth overall, covering the course in a span of 23:35, followed by Kayla Knieper, who placed fifth with a clocking of 23:53. Ashley Root finished sixth overall with a time of 24:22 and Brittany Henige was eighth at 25:13. Other finishers for the NL girls were Celeste Rousseau (26:56), Chelsea Parsons (29:51), Carla Pani (30:44), Amber Sullivan (31:47), Kristen Baryo (32:23), Jessica Parsons (33:55), Tricia Stanikiewicz (36:04) and Neha Gurgar (36:37).
