The featured keynote speaker for this year's induction ceremony will be Julie Barnese Mikula, a 2006 inductee. A 1977 Montrose graduate, she is currently chief of electronics and controls organization for NASA's Space and Aeronautical Program, and will be flying in from California. This year's Special Achievement Award goes to Mike Cooper. Mike was a talented athlete in the Class of 1965 in football, track and basketball. He was a budding student leader ready to start his senior year at Central Michigan University when a water skiing accident changed his life. In a split second in 1971, Mike became a quadriplegic due to permanent spinal cord damaged caused by the fall. Mike is being inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of his dedication to people with disabilities. Mike earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education, and a master's degree in counselor education from CMU. For 22 years he served as the senior vice president of SVRC Industries, Inc., a vocational rehabilitation organization that prepares people with disabilities for employmenet and community inclusion. In 2004, Mike became the director of Disability Services for Delta College. He assists the college in staying abreast of disability policy and practices, and directly assists students with various disabilities adjust to independence and self-sufficiency in their academic endeavors. This year's Community Service honorees are Warren and Mary Henry. The Henrys formed a national Junior Olympic archery club and trained young archers for national and state tournaments. They supported archery in the summer recreation program for 18 years, and also helped found the Montrose Bowman Archery Club in 1948, supporting it until is disbanded in 1982. The Henrys also served the Montrose community in many other ways. Mary was on the charter council group that established the first Jobs Daughters, Bethel #60 in 1957, and served as Bethel Guardian and secretary for six years. Mary also helped establish the Montrose Historical Association in 1980, and was the secretary and docent at the Montrose Historical and Telephone Pioneer Museum. She also established the genealogical department for the museum. The Henrys also served as Grand Marshals of the 1987 Blueberry Festival Parade. Warren passed away in 1990 at the age of 75, and Mary passed away in 2004 at the age of 89. There will be three sports honorees at this year's banquet -- Jack Clolinger, Sharon Rose Gill and the 1998 state champion football team. Jack Clolinger was an all-around stand-out and four-sport athlete before graduating from Montrose Township High School in 1956. Jack was recognized in basketball, baseball, football and track during his high school career. After high school, Jack played baseball for Skaff Carpets in the Flint City League, and played on the Montrose traveling team that his father coached. His skills earned him a try-out with the Detroit and Milwaukee professional baseball teams. Jack graduate from GMI as a mechanical engineer. He started his professional career at Buick, then transferred to Eaton Corporation, advancing to plant engineer before retiring in 1997. Jack was active as a little league coach and with the Athletic Boosters Club while his children were in school. Sharon Rose Gill graduated from Hill-McCloy High School in 1983 with a 3.95 GPA. She was also a stand-out athlete in basketball, softball and volleyball. She was named Outstanding Scholar-Athlete in her senior class. At Eastern Michigan University, she had an exceptional basketball career from 1984-1987, earning four letters. She still holds EMU's career record for blocked shots and is fifth all-time in the Mid-American Conference. She also holds the single game record for blocks with nine, and the season record in 1986-87 with 78. Sharon received a BBA in 1987 and a MBA in 1989 from EMU. She is currently a finance supervisor at Ford Motor Company, where she has worked for the past 17 years. The 1998 Rams football team made school history when it became the first football team to win a state championship. The strong offensive line was a contributing factor, and the defense as a whole limited many teams to less than 100 yards. The players on the team included: Max Auger, Andy Bernard, Dale Bloss, Kris Brown, Vonzell Bush, Jeremy Cochrane, Jason Emmendorfer, Wesley Fisk, Clint Galvas, Mike Gibson, Tim Hemker, Cary House, Ted Klopf, Nick Kouchar, Matt Leitelt, Tom Leonard, Eddie Magrys, Aaron Miller, Craig Parks, Bo Paxton, Nick Persails, Craig Salter, Josh Schlorf, Jared Smith, Anthony Vigil, Scott Visser, Greg Yeaster and Chris Yuhos. Coaches were Dennis Reinhart, Chris Clolinger, Craig Destrampe, Joe Gilbert, Corey Gildersleeve, Bob Hayes and Monty Stiles. |
