Saginaw County Sheriffs Deputies said a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Thomas Blakley McDonagh, 36, of Saginaw, was north-bound on M-52 when it was struck in the rear by a 1996 Buick Skylark, driven by Zachary Nathan Krzyaniak, 23, of Chesaning. Krzyaniaks car was also north-bound.

The force of the impact caused McDonagh to lose control, leave the roadway and roll over into a ditch on the east side of M-52, deputies said.

Krzyaniak also lost control after the impact, continuing north-bound on M-52, left the roadway and entered a ditch, hitting a tree, also on the east side of the road, deputies said. Due to the crash, the Skylark became engulfed in flames and the driver was unable to escape from the vehicle, deputies reported.

McDonagh was airlifted to St. Marys of Michigan Hospital in Saginaw for serious but non-life-threatening injuries, deputies said. A passenger in the Silverado, Katrine Ann McDonagh, 35, was also treated at St. Marys for minor injuries, deputies said.

Krzyaniak died as a result of the accident, deputies said.

The crash remains under investigation, but deputies report it appears speed may have been a contributing factor in the crash.
