According to Pat Cassimatis of WRAMC Public Affairs, Nick was traumatically wounded in late August this year near Sader City, Iraq, while on routine route clearance with the 4th Infantry Division. An explosively formed penetrator (EFP) hit the passenger side of the gun truck in which he was the passenger, severely injuring his lower body. He lost both legs above the knee.

Koulchar is a combat engineer and has served in the U.S. Army for two years.

According to Michael, Nicholas has been in the hospital since August 31, and has already been through more than 15 surgeries.

When asked his fondest memory of Montrose, Nicholas recalled winning the state football championship in 1998. It was the first time in Montrose High School's history. Many of his fans in Montrose have asked how he is doing. Nicholas continues with treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Those who would like to send cards can mail them to him at:

Pfc. Nicholas Koulchar, c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20307.

Many thanks to members of the Montrose community, who alerted the Tri-County Citizen to Nick's story. It has taken more than a month to obtain the necessary information from WRAMC Public Affairs. Special thanks to Nick's brother, Michael; and to 5th District Congressman Dale E. Kildee.
